National Flag, Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea national flag, designed by a local schoolgirl Susan Karike. It is divided diagonally top left to bottom right, red over black. In the upper red section, a gold bird of paradise and in the lower black section the white stars of the Southern Cross constellation. The flag is made of synthetic bunting with a cotton hoist. It is machine sewn with the design appliquéd. A rope and toggle is attached. Formerly in the collections of the London Missionary Society.
