The DELIGHT is unable to get provisions at the Cape, and by the time they reach Sumatra many men are sick or have died of scurvy. Barlow is abused by the captain and they fight physically.
The ship passes some sea tortoises and captures one for eating. The captain John Smith is a proud man and unkind to the crew. They are unable to get provisions at the Cape and as they approach Sumatra several men die of scurvy. By the time they anchor there most of the men are sick. Barlow falls out with the captain, who abuses him, and they fight physically.
