Autograph letter written by Sir Cloudeseley Shovell, 1692.

The letter concerns projected attacks on the French coast, discussing in detail the general strategic situation and giving Shovell's recommendations for the best plan of attack. The manuscript is undated and unaddressed, but appears to be the letter written to Admiral Russell immediately after the victory off La Hogue in 1692 and published in Volume 4 of 'The Naval Chronicle' (pp. 202-3). The letter was formerly mounted with a printed description stating that it was written to Admiral Lord Berkeley on 12 July 1695. Note that Shovell's first name can also be spelt Clowdisley.
