Lieutenant John Dennis Hickley journal kept while serving on various ships including HMS VALOROUS May 1882 to September 1882; HMS AUDACIOUS September 1882 to January 1884; HMS CURACOA June 1884 to October 1885; HMS ORONTES January 1886 to March 1886; HMS MONARCH May 1886 to February 1888; HMS IMPERIEUSE March 1888 to March 1891; HMS BRAHAN July 1891 to September 1891; HMS IRON DUKE September 1891 to February 1892; HMS EXCELLENT February 1892 to June 1892; HMS NAIAD July 1892 to September 1892; HMS ANSON October 1892 to November 1892 and HMS PHOEBE December 1892 to. Included in his journal are feathers from his bird hunting and his account of the operations on the Benin River in August and September 1894. He wrote in the journal three days before he died.
