Charles Howard Greenhouse was born at Liverpool in 1880. He was related to the Grenfell family through the marriage of his sister Lilian Greenhouse to Algernon George Grenfell, head teacher at Mostyn House School, Parkgate, Cheshire. He was a temporary lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) during the First World War. He served on the river monitor HMS SEVERN (1914), taking part in operations off the Belgian coast and the attack on the German light cruiser KÖNIGSBERG in the Rufiji Delta in German East Africa. In March 1918 he returned to his civilian duties as master of modern languages at the Royal Naval College, Osborne. Later he was senior master of modern languages at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. A brief service record can be found at The National Archives, see ADM 337/117/206.
