The emergence of Britain's global naval supremacy : the war of 1739-1748 /Richard Harding.
"The British involvement in the war of 1739-1748 has been generally neglected. Standing between the great victories of Marlborough in the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1713) and the even greater victories of the Seven Years War (1756-1763), it has been dismissed as inconclusive and incompetently managed. For the first time this book brings together the political and operational conduct of the war to explore its contribution to a critical development in British history during the eighteenth century - the emergence of Britain as the paramount global naval power. The war posed a unique set of problems for British politicians, statesmen and servicemen. They had to overcome domestic and diplomatic crises, culminating in the rebellion of 1745 and the threat of French invasion. Yet, far from being incompetent, these people handled the crises and learned a great deal about the conduct of global warfare. The changes they made and decisions they took prepared Britain for the decisive Anglo-French clash of arms in the Seven Years War. In this misunderstood war lie some of the key factors that made Britain the greatest naval power for the next one hundred and fifty years."--Provided by the publisher.

Resurrecting Dr. Moss : the life and letters of a Royal Navy surgeon, Edward Lawton Moss MD, RN, 1843-1880 /Paul C. Appleton ; edited by William Barr.
A biography of Edward Lawton Moss, a Royal Navy surgeon, who was born in Ireland in 1843 and went on to serve in the Caribbean, the Arctic, on Canada's Pacific coast and in the Balkans. His first posting, in 1864, to the ship HMS Bulldog, based in the West Indies, was followed by a posting to HMS Simoom in which he served for four years. A shore based appointment at Portland Sick Quarters was followed by an appointment to Esquimalt Naval Base, British Columbia. In 1875-76 he served on HMS Alert under Captain George Strong Nares as part of the British Arctic Expedition to reach the North Pole. Moss died in 1880 following the loss of his ship, HMS Atlanta, in severe weather after leaving Bermuda. The book is illustrated with colour plates of Moss's paintings and photographs. The author has based much of the text on Moss's own letters and provides contextual detail of the conditions in the Navy and the medical challenges facing a surgeon at the time. The work is supported by a bibliography and detailed notes.

Tales from the Captain's Log : from Captain Cook to Charles Darwin, Blackbeard and Nelson - accounts of great events at sea from those who were there
"For centuries, ships' commanders kept journals that recorded their missions. These included voyages of discovery to unknown lands, engagements in war and sea and general trade. Many of their logs, diaries and letters were lodged at The National Archives and give a vivid picture of the situations that they encountered. Entries range from Captain James Cook's notes of his discovery of the South Pacific and Australia, to logs of the great naval battles, such as Waterloo and Trafalgar. From the ships that attempted to stop piracy in the Caribbean, to the surgeons who recorded the health of the men they tended and naturalists who noted the exotic plants and animals they encountered, comes a fascinating picture of life at sea, richly illustrated with maps, drawings and facsimile documents found alongside the logs in the archives."--Provided by the publisher.
