Pirates : a general history of the robberies & murders of the most notorious /Charles Johnson, with an introduction and commentary by David Cordingly.
"A facsimile edition of a classic source for the history of piracy, as used by Robert Louis Stevenson in the writing of Treasure Island. Captain Charles Johnson's General History of Pirates was one of the best-selling books of 1724, when it was first published. It provides a sweeping account of what has come to be called the Golden Age of Piracy. It went through four editions in two years, and without doubt owed a substantial part of its success to a dramatic writing style that vividly captures the realities of pirates' savage existence. The book contains documentary evidence of events during the lives of its subjects. In the 270 years since its original publication, Johnson's work has come to be regarded as the classic study of one of the most popular subjects in maritime history."--Provided by the publisher.

Augustus Hervey : a naval casanova
"Augustus Hervey (1724-1779), sailor, philanderer and politician, was a fascinating and idiosyncratic character whose intensely varied life has not previously been the subject of a full biography. This book provides a captivating account of his life and times, painting a wonderfully beguiling picture of the Navy of two hundred years ago. Holmes has succeeded in revealing this multi-faceted character, warts and all - his naval achievements in command and at the Admiralty, his family relationships and marriage to the notorious Elizabeth Chudleigh, his parliamentary career and his inheritance of the Earldom of Bristol. Brave, intelligent, impetuous and loyal, never shying away from personal danger, he relished the thrill of battle and was intoxicated by the attendant rush of adrenaline. Admirals Byng and Osborn sought his youthful advice, while his speeches in Parliament are testament to his facility with words and his sound grip on many of the burning questions of the day."--Provided by the publisher.

Augustus Hervey's journal : the adventures afloat and ashore of a naval casanova
The journal of Augustus Hervey (1724-1779), the 3rd Earl of Bristol covering the life of a naval captain in war and peace during the period from 1746 to 1759. While it offers a valuable insight into the Navy of the time, it also describes Hervey's peacetime activities among the ladies of the Mediterranean cities. The journal was never intended for publication and the candid detail of Hervey's exploits meant that the memoirs were not published for more than 200 years after the events described.

The creation of the British Atlantic world / edited by Elizabeth Mancke and Carole Shammas.
"While scholars of traditional imperial history see the formation of the larger British Atlantic world as a consequence of competing European powers' efforts at nation building, Atlantic historians see the transatlantic empire shaped more by the motives of a wide variety of subnational groups. Elizabeth Mancke and Carole Shammas have compiled a volume that reflects these different viewpoints concerning the transatlantic experience during Britain's rise to world dominance between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries."--Jacket.

An account of the conduct and proceedings of the late John Gow alias Smith, captain of the late pirates, executed for murther and piracy committed on board the George gally, afterwards call'd the Revenge; with a relation of all the horrid murthers they committed in cold blood; as also of their being taken at the Islands of Orkney, and sent up prisoners to London / by Daniel Defoe ; with an introduction by Nigel Rigby.
"After seizing his ship and murdering the captain and three officers, John Gow embarked on a short but notorious piratical cruise off the coasts of Spain and Portugal in 1724. He took his ship back to his native Orkney for refitting and a little plunder, only to come up against his old school friend, James Fea of Clestrain who determined to capture Gow and his crew and bring them to justice. Reputedly written by Daniel Defoe, and first published in 1725, Nigel Rigby (Head of Research at the National Maritime Museum) recounts how the true story of Gow unfolded against the backdrop of the closing years of the 'Golden Age' of piracy."--Provided by the publisher.

Oxford : mapping the city /Daniel MacCannell.
"Over the past four and a half centuries, the magnificent city of Oxford has been mapped for many reasons, few of which have involved the mere finding of one's way through the streets. Maps were produced as part of schemes to defend Oxford from rampaging Roundheads, raging floodwaters, and the ravages of cholera; to plan the new canals and bridges of the eighteenth century and the new railways, tramways and suburbs of the nineteenth; to determine and display changes in the city's political stature under the Reform Acts of 1832 and 1867; to aid police enforcement of the laws against homosexuality; and even to plan a Soviet ground assault on the heart of the British motor industry. Given its status as a world centre of drama, poetry, literature, music, architecture, and scientific experimentation, and sometime royal capital, it is unsurprising that Oxford was the first British town to be included in map form in a tourist guidebook, as early as 1762, and one of just two inland towns mapped by French invasion planners in the Seven Years' War.For the first time, this lavishly illustrated volume brings together sixty of the most remarkable maps and views of the area that have been made by friend and foe since 1575."--Provided by the publisher.
