Royal Navy officers of the Seven Years War : a biographical dictionary of commissioned officers
1748
-
''Royal Navy Officers of the Seven Years War provides detailed reference information on over 2,000 commissioned officers of the Royal Navy: all of those whose career as a commissioned officer included the Seven Years War (1756-1763). In addition, those officers commissioned during and after 1748 and who died before 1756 are included. Sourced primarily from some 15,000 original source documents held in the National Archives, the individual entries include the officers pre-commission postings and commissions to ships as well as other naval and civil appointments. Genealogical information such as dates of birth, death, and marriage, and the names and dates of the officer's immediate family are also included for most of the entries. As the first published reference work since 1849 to include this level of detail for all the Royal Navy officers of the period Royal Navy Officers of the Seven Years provides unparalleled access to information previously unpublished.''-- Povided by the publisher.

Dressed to kill : British naval uniform, masculinity and contemporary fashions,
1748
-1857 /Amy Miller
"A unique exploration of naval identity, period fashion and masculinity. Dressed to kill is a unique and detailed analysis of naval uniform and its historical, social and economic contexts in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This fully updated and expanded second edition examines the significance of male fashion and uniform in the forging of a national, hierarchical and gendered identity. By drawing upon extensive archival research, Amy Miller provides a greater explanation of the political and social changes that impacted not only what the Royal Navy wore, but why. Parliamentary records, newspapers and museum archives give a greater contextualisation of the relationship that naval uniform represented - that of a confluence of politics and economics, fashion and popular culture. Beautifully illustrated throughout, this second edition of Dressed to Kill includes an extensive catalogue of uniforms from the rich collection of the National Maritime Museum and a selection of patterns that examine the construction of the garments."--Provided by the publisher.

Dressed to kill : British naval uniform, masculinity and contemporary fashions,
1748
-1857 /Amy Miller
"[Dressed to kill] seeks to show naval uniforms from a new perspective because it is important that the development of uniform be viewed alongside contemporary civilian fashions. The essays at the beginning not only examine the progression of regulations but also, more significantly, place the uniforms in their economic, social and historical contexts. They are followed by a catalogue of selected uniforms from the rich collections of the National Maritime Museum, which serve to reinforce the themes drawn out in the essays. The last section of line drawings of selected patterns provides an insight into the construction of the garments."--T.p. verso.

An admiral for America : Sir Peter Warren, Vice Admiral of the Red, 1703-1752 /Julian Gwyn.
"Sir Peter Warren, one of the most imaginative officers in the history of the British Navy, played a key role in the defense and expansion of British naval power in colonial America. In this biography, Julian Gwyn, the preeminent authority on Warren, describes Warren's military vision and sympathetic view of colonial life as well as his frustrated political aspirations and entrepreneurial real-estate ventures in both New York and England. A skillful analysis of the character and ambitions of a man of wide vision who seized the opportunities that luck frequently put in his way. [...] Gwyns's biography aptly describes a quintessential mid-eighteenth century British naval hero who used his fame, position, and connections to emerge as one of the wealthiest and most powerful members of the British Navy."--Provided by the publisher.

The occupation of Havana : war, trade, and slavery in the Atlantic world /Elena A. Schneider.
"In 1762, British forces mobilized more than 230 ships and 26,000 soldiers, sailors, and enslaved Africans to attack Havana, one of the wealthiest and most populous ports in the Americas. They met fierce resistance. Spanish soldiers and local militias in Cuba, along with enslaved Africans who were promised freedom, held off the enemy for six suspenseful weeks. In the end, the British prevailed, but more lives were lost in the invasion and subsequent eleven-month British occupation of Havana than during the entire Seven Years' War in North America. The Occupation of Havana offers a nuanced and poignantly human account of the British capture and Spanish recovery of this coveted Caribbean city. The book explores both the interconnected histories of the British and Spanish empires and the crucial role played by free people of color and the enslaved in the creation and defense of Havana. Tragically, these men and women would watch their promise of freedom and greater rights vanish in the face of massive slave importation and increased sugar production upon Cuba's return to Spanish rule. By linking imperial negotiations with events in Cuba and their consequences, Elena Schneider sheds new light on the relationship between slavery and empire at the dawn of the Age of Revolutions."--Provided by publisher.
