"During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the technology employed by the British navy changed not just the material resources of the British navy but the culture and performance of the royal dockyards. This book examines the role of the Inspector General of Naval Works, an Admiralty office occupied by Samuel Bentham between 1796 and 1807, which initiated a range of changes in dockyard technology by the construction of experimental vessels, the introduction of non-recoil armament, the reconstruction of Portsmouth yard, and the introduction of steam-powered engines to pump water, drive mass-production machinery and reprocess copper sheathing. While primarily about the technology, this book also examines the complementary changes in the industrial culture of the dockyards. For it was that change in culture which permitted the dockyards at the end of the Wars to maintain a fleet of unprecedented size and engage in warfare both with the United States of America and with Napoleonic Europe"--

Science, utility and maritime power : Samuel Bentham in Russia, 1779-91 /Roger Morriss.
"During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, Samuel Bentham influenced both the technology and the administrative ideas employed in the management of the British navy. His influence stemmed from his passion for science, from his desire to achieve improvements based on a belief in the principle of Utility, and from experience gained over eleven years in Russia, a large part in the service of Catherine the Great and Prince Potemkin. Having travelled extensively throughout the north and south of Russia, Poland and Siberia, he managed Potemkina (TM)s industries at Krichev, built fast river galleys, armed the Russian flotilla of small craft at Kherson and served with the flotilla that defeated the Turks in the Black Sea. His main ambition was to open river communication in Siberia and develop trade into the Pacific. However he returned to England and in 1796 became Inspector General of Naval Works, a post in which he fought for innovations in the technology and management of the British royal dockyards. Regarded then by the Navy Board as a dangerous maverick, this book reveals the experiences, creativity and thinking that made him a major figure in British naval development."--Provided by the publisher.

A life of John Julius Angerstein, 1735-1823 : widening circles in finance, philanthropy and the arts in eighteenth century London /Anthony Twist.
A biography of John Julius Angerstein (1735-1823). Born in Russia, Angerstein moved to England under the patronage of merchant Andrew Thomson, said to be his father. Introduced to Lloyd's, Angerstein primarily worked in the marine insurance industry both as a broker and underwriter. He was member of the Committees of both Lloyd's and the Lloyd's Register of Shipping, serving as Chairman of Lloyd's between 1790-1796. Angerstein's family and business relationships connected him with several London merchant communities and as a Lloyd's broker and underwriter his growing wealth enabled him to amass a fine collection of paintings. On his death, many of these would be purchased to form the nucleus of the National Gallery's collection. The author notes that while there is no surviving comment by Angerstein on the question of slavery, Angerstein is likely to have insured ships in the West Indian slave trade and was a trustee for the creditors of two sugar estates in Grenada. Angerstein supported a number of charitable endeavours including The Patriotic Fund and with William Wilberforce was a member of the General Committe of the Society for Bettering the Condition and Increasing the Comforts of the Poor. He was an early supporter of Jenner's vaccination against smallpox. Angerstein lived in Greenwich, leasing an estate from Sir Gregory Page on which he built Woodlands, his home. The book has a number of photographic plates of art works in his collection, of Angerstein and his family and his homes. There are detailed notes and a bibliography.

"Sir John Duckworth commanded ships and squadrons and fleets throughout the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. He was an assiduous correspondent, writing to Admirals St Vincent, Nelson, Collingwood, and numerous other naval officers. He kept every piece of paper he wrote on or received. He was in the first expedition to the West Indies when he went on a mission to the United States to suppress a French privateer. He commanded a ship in First of June fight in 1794, and was peripherally involved in the great naval mutinies of 1797. He was picked out by Lord St Vincent to command the recovery of Minorca in 1798. He returned to the West Indies in 1799 where he was commander-in-chief in the Leeward Islands, and then at Jamaica. There he was much involved in the Revolutionary war in Haiti, eventually receiving several thousands of French refugees and sending them on to France. A spell with the Channel fleet was succeeded by time at the blockade of Gibraltar. Against orders, he chased a French squadron across the Atlantic and destroyed it (Battle of San Domingo 1796). One of his more curious adventures was a diplomatic mission to the Constantinople to browbeat the Ottoman Sultan into making peace with Russia in 1807. He failed, of course, and was criticised for not bombarding the city. He served out his time afloat with the Channel fleet, displaying his usual humanity. A three-year appointment as governor of Newfoundland completed his career."--Provided by the publisher.
