Northern lights : a history of the Arctic Scots /Edward J. Cowan.
"Northern Lights reveals Scotland's previously unsung role in the remarkable history of Arctic exploration. There was the intrepid John Ross, an eccentric hell-raiser from Stranraer and a veteran of three Arctic expeditions; his nephew, James Clark Ross, the most experienced explorer of his generation and discoverer of the Magnetic North Pole; Dr. John Richardson of Dumfries, who became an accidental cannibal and deliberate executionaer of a murderer as well as an engaging natural historian; and Orcadian John Rae, the man who first discovered evidence of Sir John Franklin and his crew's demise. Northern Lights also pays tribute and reveals other overlooked stories in this fascinating era of history: the Scotch Irish, the whalers, and especially the Inuit, whose unparalleled knowledge of the Arctic environment was often indispensible." --

George Charles Smith of Penzance : from Nelson sailor to mission pioneer /Roald Kverndal.
"In the two previous books of his trilogy, Seamen's missions (1986) and The way of the sea (2008), the author researched how the seafarers' mission movement began and expanded. This third volume traces the captivating human drama surrounding the origins. It presents, for the first time ever, the embattled life of George Charles Smith---today recognized worldwide as the founder of the Maritime Mission Movement."--From back cover.

Raffles and the golden opportunity 1781-1826 / Victoria Glendinning.
A biography of Sir Stamford Raffles, best known as the founder of Singapore. Joining the East India Company as a clerk at the age of 14, Raffles was appointed assistant secretary to the government of the Company's Penang presidency. In 1811, following the invasion of Java, Raffles was appointed lieutenant-governor by his patron Lord Minto. Raffles came under criticism for his administration and financial record in Java after its return to the Dutch and he was transferred to Benkoolen. Then, in 1818, Raffles and Colonel William Farquhar were tasked with finding a strategic trading post in the area resulting in the establishment of a settlement at Singapore. On returning to England in 1824, Raffles lost all his personal possesions in a fire which destroyed HMS Fame and left him financially ruined. He married twice, firstly to Olivia Mariamne Fancourt and following her death, to Sophia Hull. He wrote the History of Java, had a keen interest in natural history and was elected first president of the Zoological Society in 1826. The text is supported by illustrations and a bibliography.

The Campbelltown convicts / Peter J. Hinds.
"On 19 March 1818, a young man called John Champley was committed to the House of Correction in Beverley, Yorkshire, England, for two years hard labour. He had been convicted of being a party to the theft of eighty pounds of butt leather in Pocklington on 13 December 1817. Four months later, after an attempted escape from the House of Correction, he was sentenced to transportation to one of His Majesty's 'Plantations or Colonies abroad'. Champley arrived in the penal colony of Sydney Cove on Thursday 7 October 1819 and was assigned to a shoemaker at Parramatta. After receiving his freedom in May 1826, Champley left Parramatta -- with the shoemaker's wife. Early in 1829, Champley and his family left Sydney to live at Bong Bong. In February 1830, following a robbery at the nearby Oldbury estate, Champley and his two alleged accomplices, John Yates and Joseph Shelvey, were sentenced to death at Campbelltown. They were saved from the gallows upon appeal by their barrister and their death penalties commuted to 'life and hard labour in irons'. Champley and Shelvey were sent to Norfolk Island, and Yates to Moreton Bay. About a year later, two captured bushrangers from Jack Donohoe's gang made confessions concerning the robbery and Champley, Shelvey and Yates were brought home and pardoned. However, the trial and incarceration had by now reduced their lives from one of hope to one of despair."--Provided by the publisher.

Nelson's Right Hand Man The Life and Times of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle. ,E. J. Hounslow
A biography of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle (1765-1819). Joining the Royal Navy as a midshipman in the Hussar at the age of 11, he progressed quickly through the ranks, being promoted to lieutenant in 1782 and was given command of the sloop Spitfire in 1790. As a post-captain, Fremantle commanded the Tartar and came to the notice of Horatio Nelson during the Siege of Bastia. Further commands included the Inconstant and the Ganges at the Battle of Copenhagen. He continued to serve alongside Nelson as his companion and junior officer, taking command of the Neptune, the third in Nelson's division at the Battle of Trafalgar. Following the Battle, Fremantle towed the Victory back to Gibraltar and then spent the next five years in England serving as Member of Parliament for Sandwich and then rear-admiral before taking command of the Adriatic Fleet. Promoted to vice admiral, he became commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean Fleet in 1818. He died from a sudden illness at home in 1819 leaving his widow Elizabeth (nee Wynne) and children. The text includes extracts of letters and diaries and is supported by photographic plates and a bibliography.

The world of visual time signals for mariners : time balls, time guns, time lights and other signals /Roger Kinns, editor
"This book describes the worldwide evolution of land-based visual time signals that were used by mariners in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for accurate navigation at sea. They followed development of chronometers which were carried in ships to show mean time at Greenwich, the chosen prime meridian. Greenwich time could be compared with local astronomical time to determine longitude, but chronometers were mechanical devices that had to be checked for accuracy. Land-based signals that were regulated by astronomical observations evolved from the ideas in 1818 of Robert Wauchope, a British naval officer who served at the Cape of Good Hope. He inspired introduction of time balls, specifically the time ball at Greenwich in 1833 which set the standard for subsequent installations and is still in operation today. The main emphasis is on the external appearance of time signals at different locations around the world and how they were used by mariners for rating chronometers. Time ballsand guns also became popular signals for public use and workplace control but then had social and political implications."--

The diary of Joseph Farington / edited by Kenneth Garlick and Angus Macintyre
"Joseph Farington (1747-1821) was a professional topographical artist and lived most of his life in London. Through his extensive involvement in the affairs of the Royal Academy, his wide circle of friends, and his membership in several clubs and societies, he touched the life of his time at many points. This diary, which he kept from 1793 until his death, provides a meticulous record of his actions and observations and is an invaluable source for the history of English art and artists. It also constitutes an absorbing record of this period's social, political, and literary developments."--Provided by the publisher.
