The Bright-Meyler papers : a Bristol-West India connection, 1732-
1837
/edited by Kenneth Morgan.
"These documents illuminate the conduct of British trade in the Caribbean when slavery was at its height and Jamaica was the wealthiest territory in Britain's Atlantic empire. Pertaining to the commercial and plantation interests of two Bristol families connected through marriage and business, the volume sheds light on how fortunes were created by merchants striving for improvement, independence, and social mobility. The documents include correspondence, wills and inventories, partnership agreements, insurance policies and property deeds. The introduction addresses issues of the slave trade and sugar cultivation, capital accumulation, the ways in which a West India fortune was created, the risk environment of the Caribbean, and social, economic and demographic conditions in 18th-century Bristol and Jamaica."--Provided by the publisher.

The Thames Iron Works
1837
-1912 : a major shipbuilder on the Thames /Daniel Harrison.
"The Thames Iron Works and Shipbuilding Company, one of the great private enterprises of the Victorian age, launched some of the most famous warships of the time from its slipways at the mouth of the River Lea. A pioneer of shipbuilding in iron, the yard's expertise was also deployed in ground-breaking civil engineering projects using iron structures. Several important components of the yard were investigated at a Crossrail site on the Limmo peninsula, including engineering workshops, a furnace, a mast house and mould loft building, and a slipway. An account of the history of the company places it in the wider context of London?s 19th-century shipbuilding industry."--Provided by the publisher.

Imperial steam : modernity on the sea route to India,
1837
-74 /Jonathan Stafford.
"Marrying technological innovation with the workings of Britain's expanding Eastern empire, P&O's steamships provived a ready spectacle for the Victorian public imagination and a vantage point - both literal and literary - from which to view and encounter the imperial world. The steamship's modernity installed in its passengers not only a hubristic sense of identification with the British Empire, but also had significant corollaries for the perceptions of empire for those in the metropole. Imperial steam thus contributes to our understanding of the role of imperial networks in the production of the British imperial world view."

P&O at 175 : a world of ships and shipping since
1837
/Bruce Peter, Philip Dawson.
A history of the Peninsula and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) from its origins as a steamship line serving the Mediterranean and the Near Orient. The development of the fleet through the decades is illustrated with many photographs, both black and white and colour. There is a section on P&O's participation in the Falklands War in 1982, when the Canberra was requisitioned as a troop carrier; the Uganda was used as a medical ship; and the North Sea freight ferry Elk was requisitioned to carry munitions and general supplies. The fleet list is not comprehensive but concentrates on the key ships discussed in the book.

:letters home from a Mediterranean flagship
1837
-1841 /edited by Barbara McDowell.
Features the letters of John Loudon written to his wife while on a three-year tour of duty on board the flagship, the Princess Charlotte, as Secretary to Admiral Sir Robert Stopford in command of the Mediterranean fleet. Writing to his wife on average once a week, Loudon's letters have survived, but not those sent in return. In some 200 letters Loudon describes daily life on board, his relationships with other officers, including Charles Austen, brother of Jane, as well as the attacks on the Syrian coast towards the end of the tour. Writing with humour and humanity, Loudon provides advice and support to his wife during his absence and the letters provide a valuable insight into the life of his family at home in England.
