This cohesive collection investigates how Loyalism and the empire were mutually constituted and reconstituted from the eighteenth century onward. P&O : across the oceans, across the years : a pictorial voyage /Ruth Artmonsky.
Using personal recollections from P&O Heritage, this book covers the history of P&O from 1837 when the 'Peninsular Steam Navigation Company', as it was originally known, won the first government ocean mail contract to carry mail to the Iberian Peninsular of Spain and Portugal. As a 'Pictorial Voyage' it includes photographs, illustrations, advertisements, paintings and a selection of sketches from W W Lloyd, the latter depicting a witty and intimate picture of P&O passengers of the time. Chapters include Starting Out, Heading East, Ship Style, Seafarers and Life Aboard. The final chapter, 'Heritage', gives some idea of the vast and diverse collections in the P&O Heritage Collection.
