China station : the British military in the Middle Kingdom 1839-1997 /Mark Felton. "The Author, who lives in Shanghai, sets out to demonstrate that the British military has been at the forefront of many of the great changes that have swept China over the last two centuries. He devotes chapters to the various wars, military adventures and rebellions that regularly punctuated Sino#British relationships since the 1st Opium War 1839-1842. This classic example of Imperial intervention saw the establishment of Hong Kong and Shanghai as key trading centres. The Second Opium War and the Taiping and Boxer Rebellions saw the advancement of British influence despite determined but unsuccessful efforts by the Chinese to loosen the grip of Western domination. The Royal Navys might ensured that, by gunboat diplomacy, trading rights and new posts were established and great fortunes made. But in the 1940s the British grossly underestimated Japanese military might and intentions with disastrous results. After the Second World War the British returned to find that the Americans had supplanted them. The Communists victory in the Civil War sealed British and Western fates and, while Hong Kong remained under British control until 1997, the end of British rule was almost inevitable. cruise of the `Gipsy' : the journal of John Wilson, surgeon on a whaling voyage to the Pacific Ocean 1839 Wilson joined the London-based whaleship Gipsy in 1839, within three months of obtaining his LSA (Licence of the Society of Apothocaries) and at a time when there was said to be an oversupply of medical practitioners. Following the voyage, Wilson qualified as MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) and set up in general practice in London. Wilson's journal provides details of the voyage as well as details of everyday life on board and his entries are accompanied by drawings and sketches. A sailor's life : the life and times of John Short of Watchet 1839-1933 /Tom Brown. John Short ('Yankee Jack') was a merchant seaman and a recognised 'shantyman' taken on as crew because in addition to his experience as a seaman, he had the ability to lead work songs to keep the crew working at hauling or heaving efficiently. Short contributed fifty-seven shanties when interviewed by the English folk song collector Cecil Sharp in 1914, the majority deep-sea shanties. Short followed his father into the coastal trade at the age of nine in 1848 but soon moved into ocean trading routes. Short retired from the sea in 1901 and died in 1933, his death marked by an obituary in The Times. His story is told through his voyages and extracts from poems and shanties. The shanties are published in full with music in an appendix. Other appendices list and provide further details of his ships and voyages undertaken as well as a family tree.
