pictures covering the history of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and Royal Mail Lines, Limited, from
1839
"This collection of material about the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and Royal Mail Lines, Limited comprises a wide range of items, both written and graphic, which are no longer generally available to the public. Much of it, in fact, was never freely available to the general public. The Scrapbook is not intended to be a history of Royal Mail, but provides information and pictures which include previously published material. This includes much of the text of The Royal Mail War Book 1914-18 (by H W Leslie), and the whole of Royal Mail 1839-1939 and Eight Bells (both by T A Bushell), all of which are now very rare. A fourth book, A Link of Empire, covering the years 1839 to 1909, was privately published and was never freely available, and so a large portion of its contents are reproduced in the Scrapbook. .... In addition to written information there are documents which display photographs and other illustrations, postcards and printed matter, providing by far the most comprehensive coverage of Company documentation ever compiled."--P. i.

Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, 1820-1831 : the founding of a colonial observatory : incorporating a biography of Fearon Fallows /by Brian Warner.
This volume presents a comprehensive account of the origin, construction and use of the first major astronomical observatory in the southern hemisphere. Technical aspects, such as the instruments and their makers, the installation of the instruments and their initial problems, are described. In addition, the difficulties of founding a scientific institution in a remote colony are discussed in detail. The book includes a biography of the Cambridge-trained mathematician Fearon Fallows, the Observatory's first Director. The architecture, building methods and construction techniques are analyzed. There is also a wealth of detail on social aspects of life in Cape Town in the 1820s, including slavery and ecclesiastical matters. The book is unusual in the emphasis it gives to the human side of the story. It will be of interest to historians of science, astronomers, and historians, particularly of early nineteenth-century South Africa.

Captain "Hell Roaring" Mike Healy : from American slave to Arctic hero /Dennis L. Noble and Truman R. Strobridge ; foreword by Gene Allen Smith and James C. Bradford.
A biography of Captain Michael A. Healy (1839-1904), born to an Irish father and a Georgia slave mother. Taken by his father to Massachusetts, Healy went to sea at the age of fifteen and ten years later joined the US Revenue Cutter Service as an officer serving on the North West coast of America, primarily in Alaskan and Arctic waters. He gained a reputation as a hard-drinking disciplinarian, eventually being convicted for drunkenness and placed on the awaiting-orders list for four years. The authors also aim to provide an insight into how race and religion influenced maritime institutions during the late 19th century.
