Ellerman Lines : remembering a Great British shipping company /Ian Collard.
A history of the Ellerman Lines shipping company. John Reeves Ellerman was born in Kingston upon Hull in 1862, trained as a chartered accountant and had founded his own accountancy practice, J Ellerman & Co, by the age of 24. Ellerman's first involvement in shipping came in 1892 when he joined Leyland Line and was subsequently appointed chair. Ellerman Lines Ltd was formed on 22 January 1902. The succesful acquisition of other shipping lines became a feature of the business and included the Papayanni Line, City Line, Sun Shipping Co, Hall Line and Bucknall Steamship Line. Ellerman died in 1933. The company was bought out by management in 1985 and subsequently merged with the Cunard Line to form Cunard-Ellerman in 1987. It passed to the Andrew Weir Shipping Group and its Mediterranean, Middle East, African, Indian and Pakistan services were acquired by Hamburg Sud in 2003. The book contains an Ellerman Lines fleet list commencing with the Arcadia, built in 1855. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs.

The Crimean War in Imperial Context, 1854-1856 / Andrew C. Rath.
"The Crimean War was fought far from its namesake peninsula in Ukraine. Until now, accounts of Britain's and France's naval campaigns against Czarist Russia in the Baltic, White Sea, and Pacific have remained fragmented, minimized, or thinly-referenced. This book considers each campaign from an imperial perspective extending from South America to Finland. Ultimately, this regionally-focused approach reveals that even the smallest Anglo-French naval campaigns in the remote White Sea had significant consequences in fields ranging from medical advances to international maritime law. Considering the perspectives of neutral powers, including China, Japan, and Sweden-Norway, allows Rath to examine the Crimean conflict's impact on major historical events ranging from the "opening" of Tokugawa Japan to Russia's annexation of large swaths of Chinese territory. Complete with customized maps and an extensive reference section, this will become essential reading for a varied audience."--Provided by the publisher.
