Before the Ironclad : warship design and development 1815-1860 /D K Brown, RCNC.
"In the massive revolution that affected warship design between Waterloo and the Warrior, the Royal Navy was traditionally depicted as fiercely resisting every change until it was almost too late, but these old assumptions were first challenged in this authoritative history of the transition from sail to steam. Originally published in 1990, it began a process of revaluation which has produced a more positive assessment of the British contribution to the naval developments of the period. This classic work is here reprinted in an entirely new edition, with more extensive illustration. Beginning with the structural innovations of Robert Seppings, the book traces the gradual introduction of more scientific methods and the advent of steam and the paddle fighting ship, iron hulls and screw propulsion. It analyses the performance of the fleet in the war with Russia (1853-1856), and concludes with the design of the Warrior, the first iron-hulled, seagoing capital ship in the world. The author presents a picture of an organisation that was well aware of new technology, carefully evaluating its practical advantage, and occasionally (as with its enthusiastic espousal of iron hulls) moving too quickly for the good of the service. Written by an eminent naval architect, Before the Ironclad is both a balanced account of general developments, and an in-depth study of the ships themselves."--Provided by the publisher.

Lusitania and Beyond: the life of commodore William Thomas Turner
A biography of William Thomas Turner (1856-1933), Captain of the RMS Lusitania at the time of its sinking in May 1915. The authors follow Turner's early years with the merchant marine and his progression through the ranks with Cunard. From 1903 Turner was Captain of the Aleppo, Carpathia, Ivernia, Caronia, and Umbria before taking command of the Lusitania in 1908. He subsequently assumed command of the Mauretania and Aquitania and was appointed Commodore in March 1913. The authors concentrate on Turner's story rather than an account of the events surrounding the sinking of the Lusitania, seeking to present the information that Turner had available to him at the time of the disaster, and to restore his reputation, which was damaged as a result of the sinking.

Captain's Wife
This is a historical novel following the true story of Mary Patten. She was the wife of Captain Joshua Patten, and travelled with him when he was hired to navigate the Neptune's Car, a clipper ship, from New York to San Francisco in 1856. The voyage was troubled from the outset. There was a plot of mutiny amongst the crew and Mary's husband fell ill as the ship reached the equator. She had no choice but to take command of the ship and navigate round Cape Horn while encountering exceptionally bad weather. Although Mary had learnt to navigate on a previous voyage with her husband, on the Neptune's Car she had to deal with an unstable crew and nurse her sick husband. She also discoverd that she was pregnant while on the voyage.

North by degree : new perspectives on Arctic exploration /Susan A. Kaplan and Robert McCracken Peck, editors.
"North by Degree: New Perspectives on Arctic Exploration is a volume of papers on the history of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Arctic exploration. The authors have contextualised expeditions, examining the social, cultural, technological, and environmental settings in which exploration endeavours were conceived, carried out, described, and understood by the public. Honoring the hundreth anniversary of Robert E. Peary's historic 1908-09 North Pole Expedition and recognising the third International Polar Year (2007-09) served as starting point for a conference designed to bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines whose work touches on different facets of Arctic exploration. Susan A. Kaplan (The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College) and Robert McCracken Peck (Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia) joined forces, and invited the Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science (PACHS) and the American Philosophical Society to partner with them. North by Degree: An International Conference on Arctic Exploration took place in Philadelphia in May 2008. The papers in this volume are a subset of those presented at that gathering and are authored by scholars from variosu disciplines, including English, art history, anthropology, archaeology, history, ethnohistory, and Native American studies. The papers cast light on aspects of exploration initiatives not examined in most biographies of explorers, official expedition narratives, or overviews of the history of Arctic exploration."--Provided by the publisher.
