Cunard's queens revealed : the evolution of six great passenger ships /David L. Williams
This book tells the stories of the six ships of the Cunard Line known as the Cunard Queens - the most famous ocean liners in the world. The stories of these iconic ships - Queen Mary (1936), Queen Elizabeth (1940), Queen Elizabeth 2 (1969), Queen Mary 2 (2003), Queen Victoria (2007) & Queen Elizabeth (2010) - are summarised, from initial development, design and construction to their internal decor, facilities, technical features and voyages. There is colour photography of the ships' interiors and exteriors throughout and a useful appendix detailing each ship's career at a glance and vital statistics.

Captain Kidd : the hunt for the truth /Craig Cabell, Graham A. Thomas and Allan Richards.
A re-examination of the life of Captain Kidd focusing on the ambiguities surrounding his final voyage, and subsequent trial for piracy. Officially made a privateer by Royal Commission in 1696 and charged with capturing and plundering pirate ships as well as French ships, Kidd is said to have turned pirate himself. Following his arrest, Kidd maintained his innocence in the face of overwhelming evidence against him and a changing political climate. Kidd was found guilty and executed by hanging in 1701. Includes a list of some crew members who served with Kidd on the Blessed William, Adventure Galley and Adventure Prize.

Liffey ships & shipbuilding / Pat Sweeney.
"This book provides a comprehensive history of the four shipbuilding yards that have operated along Dublin's River Liffey since shipbuilding began there. It begins with the Walpole and Webb shipyard from the early 1830's and documents the progression of the shipbuilding industry in Dublin throughout the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War and the vital part the shipyards played in keeping the neutral Irish merchant fleet operating in order to feed the country during the war - resulting in secret talks with the British navy about building ships in Dublin for the British during the Second World War. The narrative goes up to 1969 and the author then details the efforts that have been made to revive Dublin's shipbuilding industry in more recent years. Includes a 16-page photo section."--from publisher.

Royal Greenwich through time / David Ramzan.
"Greenwich has become a well known tourist attraction through naval and royal connections dating back almost two thousand years. Greenwich has gone through many changes architecturally and culturally since tourists began visiting the area in the early 1800s, first by river boat and then by the latest innovation in public transport, the steam railway. Greenwich was put on the map literally in 1884 when Prime Meridian was officially positioned at the Royal Observatory. Queen Elizabeth II bestowed Royal Borough status upon Greenwich, which comes into effect during the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, as recognition of royal associations with this historic riverside town. Essential reading for anyone who knows and loves the area, this publication is a colourful celebration of Royal Greenwich Through Time."--from publisher.

The image of the world : 20 centuries of world maps /Peter Whitfield.
"From the classic Greek origins of the world map, through the elaborately decorated manuscript maps and printed maps of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which are works of art in themselves, to modern scientific maps showing the ocean floor, Peter Whitfield examines the history of world mapmaking through 70 outstanding individual examples. He discusses each map in relation to the religious, political, social or economic climates in which they were produced and considers what these maps reveal about the perceptions of their makers."--Dust jacket.

British motor gun boat, 1939-45 / Angus Konstam.
Motor Gun Boats were the Royal Navy?s Spitfires of the seas. Bristling with small-calibre guns and machine guns, they served in a variety of roles during the war. In the early war period they battled against German E-boats in the English Channel, then went on the offensive, searching the enemy shore for likely targets. At other times, they ran support for Motor Torpedo Boats and were used to deliver commandos on various raids.

The nautical sextant / by W. J. Morris.
"Reveals in pictures, prose, and perspective the experience and knowledge gained by the author from years of acquiring, studying, and restoring sextants from earlier times and from around the world. This fascinating book owes much of its attraction to the expert description and photos of the mechanics of the sextants and their subassemblies. It is also the story of how different manufacturers, in different times and places, solved the same mechanical problems in different ways in order to perfect one of the most accurate mechanical devices ever produced by man. All of this is complemented by an historical overview which has never been published until now"--Book jacket flap.

A world apart : the story of Hebridean shipping /Andrew Clark.
"The lure of the Hebrides has always been as much about travelling as about arriving. The fact that, half a century ago, the means of travel was often very slow and unpredictable was part of its charm, and part of the wider lure of the Hebridean landscape and its people. This helps to explain why nostalgia for these ships of yesteryear is as strong as interest in today's ultra functional fleet. Those elegant old ships symbolised a way of life that made the Hebrides a world apart."--Provided by the publisher.
