Transatlantic liners : 1950-1970 /William H. Miller
"Transatlantic Liners 1950-1970 is a glorious reference of a grand but bygone age - those passenger ships, large and small, that crossed the Atlantic. There were the likes of the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, SS United States, Caronia, Andrea Doria, but also smaller, less memorable ships such as the Noordam, Parthia and Laurentia. The ships, over 150 of them, are grouped by owner - from the short-lived American Banner Line to Israel's Zim Lines. Each ship is given a full and comprehensive reference: details (routing, length, tonnage, builder, speed, passengers carried, etc.) as well as a full chronology of the vessel's career, including its ultimate disposition and fate. Overall, it is an extensive reference work on a glorious past and a revival of an all-star maritime cast."--Provided by the publisher.

Map of the Moon / drawn by H. Percy Wilkins.
"This rarely-seen map of the Moon originates from a 300-inch hand-drawn map produced by the engineer and amateur astronomer Hugh Percival Wilkins (1896-1960). Combining artistry with scientific precision, Wilkins's detailed map reveals the rugged terrain of our celestial neighbour. First published in 1946 as a 100-inch reproduction, Wilkins continued to revise and expand his observations and produced this third edition in 1951. Comprised of 25 sheets, it was subsequently used by amateur and professional astronomers, and was even purchased by NASA. Acquired by the Museum in 2006, Wilkins's Map of the Moon is reproduced faithfully in this volume over 90 pages, making this beautiful record of astronomical history available for all."--Provided by the publisher.

Kendall's longitude
"Lost at sea: every mariner's fear. Maritime navigational tools could find latitude, but finding longitude remained elusive until Harrison developed the reliable sea clock, H4. Building on H4's success, Kendall made a series of nautical timekeepers, K1, K2 and K3. This is the story of the K2 timekeeper; its adventurous voyages, the people it touched, and its place in history. K2's first voyage, accompanied by the young Nelson, was nearly its last in the crushing Arctic ice. The next two expeditions saw it survive kidnappings, nautical intrigue, and gunpowder plots of the American revolutionary wars. The slave coasts of Africa followed. Bligh took K2 on the Bounty, but lost it in a fight with the mutineers in 1789. It was recovered by an American Quaker from Nantucket, only to be stolen by the Spanish. It rode on mules along the Andes before sailing into the Opium Wars. K2 finally returned to Greenwich in 1963."--Provided by the publisher.

Sealink British ferries.
"Sealink's antecedents go back to the packet boats of the days before steam. The invention of the steam engine greatly assisted the development of the railways and led to the growth of the packet boats. The private railway companies recognised the need for an integrated transport system which included operating services across the sea routes. The Big Four railway companies were nationalised in 1948 and their shipping services came under the control of the British Transport ommission. In 1968 a Shipping and International Services Division of the British Railways Board was formed. This separate division operated under the brand name of Sealink. In 1979 the assets of the Shipping and International Services Division were transferred to Sealink UK Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary company. With a wealth of previously unpublished images, Ian Collard tells the fascinating story of this unique shipping company."--Provided by the publisher.

Painting war : George Plante's combat art in World War II /Kathleen Broome Williams.
"Scottish artist George Plante did not enter World War II as an artist but as a volunteer radio operator in the British merchant fleet. There he spent more than two years engaged in the long-running and fierce Battle of the Atlantic, splitting his time between Britain and the United States. But while dodging U-boats and battling the elements, he also painted"--

Imperial twilight : the Opium War and the end of China's last Golden Age /Stephen Platt.
"In 1839 Britain embarked on the first of its wars with China, sealing the fate of the most prosperous and powerful empire in Asia, if not the world. Motivated by drug profiteering and free-trade interests, the Opium War helped shape the China we know today, sparking the eventual fall of the Qing dynasty and the rise of nationalism and communism in the twentieth century. Imperial Twilight is a riveting and revealing account of the end of China's Golden Age and the origins of one of the most unjust wars in history."--Provided by the publisher.

Forgotten few : naval fighter pilots in the Battle of Britain /Paul Beaver.
"Forgotten Few is a homage to the 57 naval pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain. For 20 years, the Admiralty and the Air Ministry did not recognise the valiant efforts of these young men - now historian Paul Beaver has compiled their biographies and explains the award of the coveted Battle of Britain clasp. Nine of the Forgotten Few died in combat but five became aces. There is no doubt that they contributed to the ultimate victory, even though they were mostly flying their obsolete Sea Gladiator biplanes and obsolescent Fairey Fulmar. Twenty-three more pilots joined famous RAF Fighter Command squadrons and one achieved local notoriety as Douglas Bader's wingman in fights over London."--Provided by the publisher.

My cathedral in the sea : a history of the Conway /Harley Stanton.
"My Cathedral in the Sea traces the story of the Conway from its 1851 construction in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada to its final resting place in the Atlantic. Conway traversed the globem making many trans-Atlantic crossings and five journeys to Australia; in 1860 the ship barely survived a storm close to Madeira. Extensive extracts from logs, passenger diaries and contemporary newspapers contribute to a vivid picture of life on a sailing ship in the mid-nineteenth century."--Provided by the publisher.

Superior : the return of race science /Angela Saini.
"Where did the idea of race come from, and what does it mean? In an age of identity politics, DNA ancestry testing and the rise of the far right, a belief in biological differences between populations is experiencing a resurgence. The truth is: race is a social construct. Our problem is we find this hard to believe. In Superior, award-winning author Angela Saini investigates the concept of race, from its origins to the present day. Engaging with geneticists, anthropologists, historians and social scientists from across the globe, Superior is a rigorous, much needed examination of the insidious and destructive nature of the belief that race is real, and that some groups of people are superior to others."--Provided by the publisher.

Cook's Legacy - Furs, Discovery and Conflict / Winifred Dixon.
Captain James Cook was an outstanding example of navigation and seamanship, and together with the officers and men under his command, circumnavigated the globe three times. One of these became Captain George Dixon. In this unique biography, the author - who hopes the Captain to be an ancestor of her late husband - traces Dixon's journey to discover the Northwest Passage as he followed Cook, continuing to when he was sent on a trading voyage to deal in furs on the Northwest Coast. Well-researched, the story is told in multiple viewpoints with detailed historical observations woven throughout. Marrying with this is the author's own experience of visiting the places that James Cook and George Dixon would have seen, as she and her daughter travelled to Canada and by ship to Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Northwest Coast and on to Juneaux Alaska. As for George, the author hasn't proven a link yet, but there's always tomorrow! The book will be enjoyed by maritime history enthusiasts as well as readers who enjoy sailing adventures.

Midget submarine commander: the life of Rear Admiral Godfrey Place ... 19 July 1921-27 December 1994 /Paul Watkins.
Of all the acts of gallantry in World War II few were as audacious as the attack by midget submarines on the pride of the German fleet, the battleship Tirpitz. Lieutenant Place was in command of submarine X7 in September 1943 and travelled over 1000 miles, negotiating minefields and antisubmarine nets to accurately place four tons of high explosive under the hull of the Tirpitz. Using many first-hand accounts, the book details his life.

James Cook : the voyages /William Frame with Laura Walker.
"This landmark book is published to coincide with a major exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of Cook's first voyage. A stunningly illustrated, object-centred history, this book offers a once in a generation opportunity to discover the uniquely rich Captain Cook collection of the British Library. The authors explore a series of themes including the navigation and charting of the Pacific; first encounters between Western and indigenous cultures; the representation of the voyages in art; and scientific discovery and the natural world. Themes of cultural encounter and scientific discovery are interwoven with the personal stories of the key protagonists, including James Cook and Joseph Banks. The illustrations include drawings by all the artists employed on the voyage, as well as the only surviving paintings by Tupaia, a Polynesian high priest who joined Cook's ship at Tahiti and sailed to New Zealand and Australia."--Provided by the publisher.

The European seaborne empires : from the thirty years' war to the age of revolutions /Gabriel Paquette
"In this thematic survey, Gabriel Paquette focuses on the development of the Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, and Dutch overseas empires in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He draws on recent advances in the field to re-examine their development, from efficacious forms of governance and finance to coercive violence. Beginning with a narrative overview of imperial expansion that incorporates recent critiques of older scholarly approaches, Paquette then analyzes the significance of these empires, including their political, economic, and social consequences and legacies. He makes the multifaceted history of Europe's globe-spanning empires in this crucial period accessible to new readers."--Provided by the publisher

European Ironclads 1860-75 : The Gloire sparks the great ironclad arms race /Angus Konstam.
"From Spain to Russia, and from Ottoman Turkey to Bismarck's Prussia, this book explores 15 years that transformed European naval warfare. When the Gloire slid down the Toulon slipway in 1859, it changed sea power forever. With this ship, the world's first oceangoing ironclad, France had a warship that could sink any other, and which was proof against the guns of any wooden ship afloat. Instantly, an arms race began between the great navies of Europe - first to build their own ironclads, and then to surpass each other's technology and designs. As both armour and gun technology rapidly improved, naval architects found new ways to mount and protect guns. The ram briefly came back into fashion, and Italian and Austro-Hungarian fleets fought the ironclad era's great battle at Lissa. By the end of this revolutionary period, the modern battleship was becoming recognizable, and new naval powers were emerging to dominate Europe's waters."--Provided by the publisher.
