A tree without roots : the guide to tracing British, African and Asian-Caribbean ancestry /Paul Crooks.
"From a man who dedicated more than 11 years of his life to uncovering the saga of his African slave ancestors comes a guide for others to capitalise on his informed techniques and discover just what it means to know where one is from. Offering groundbreaking insights into how to delve into one's past, this book is intended both for beginners, educationalists and experienced researchers and provides inspiration to those who believe that their search may be hampered by having mixed parentage or a history of migration through the ages. An instructive guide for those interested in finding out more about their family connections with the Caribbean islands, it offers techniques and approaches that can be applied to any one researching their ancestors around the world."--Provided by the publisher.

Piracy in World History / edited by Stefan Eklèof Amirell, Bruce Buchan, and Hans Hèagerdal.
"In a modern global historical context, scholars have often regarded piracy as an essentially European concept which was inappropriately applied by the expanding European powers to the rest of the world, mainly for the purpose of furthering colonial forms of domination in the economic, political, military, legal and cultural spheres. By contrast, this edited volume highlights the relevance of both European and non-European understandings of piracy to the development of global maritime security and freedom of navigation. It explores the significance of 'legal posturing' on the part of those accused of piracy, as well as the existence of non-European laws and regulations regarding piracy and related forms of maritime violence in the early modern era. The authors in this volume highlight cases from various parts of the early-modern world, thereby explaining piracy as a global phenomenon."--Provided by the publisher.

Stars / Greg Brown.
"Whether stargazing with the naked eye or observing deep space with the largest telescopes in the world, humans have a seemingly neverending fascination with the stars. Our ancestors saw patterns in their random arrangement, inventing both tales of legendary heroes and the pastime of dot-to-dot in one fell swoop. But it's only in the last century or so that the natures of these distant lights have been revealed - and it's more incredible than any legend. How are stars born? How long do they live? And just how many times can you read the word 'trillion' before it starts sounding made up? Find out as astronomer Dr Greg Brown of Royal Observatory Greenwich takes a short diversion from obsessing over black holes to illuminate us about the lives of stars - ending in black holes, naturally."

The astronomer's chair : a visual and cultural history /Omar W. Nasim.
"The astronomer's chair is a leitmotif in the history of astronomy, appearing in hundreds of drawings, prints, and photographs from a variety of sources. Nineteenth-century stargazers in particular seemed eager to display their observing chairs - task-specific, often mechanically adjustable observatory furniture designed for use in conjunction with telescopes. But what message did they mean to send with these images? In The Astronomer's Chair, Omar W. Nasim considers these specialised chairs as both image and object, offering an original framework for linking visual and material cultures. Observing chairs, Nasim ingeniously argues, showcased and embodied forms of scientific labor, personae, and bodily practice that appealed to bourgeois sensibilities."--Provided by the publisher.

Jews don't count : how identity politics failed one particular identity /David Baddiel.
"Jews Don't Count is a book for people who consider themselves on the right side of history. People fighting the good fight against homophobia, disablism, transphobia and, particularly, racism. People, possibly, like you. It is the comedian and writer David Baddiel's contention that one type of racism has been left out of this fight. In his unique combination of close reasoning, polemic, personal experience and jokes, Baddiel argues that those who think of themselves as on the right side of history have often ignored the history of anti-Semitism. He outlines why and how, in a time of intensely heightened awareness of minorities, Jews don't count as a real minority: and why they should."--Provided by the publisher.

Shipboard literary cultures : reading, writing, and performing at sea /Susann Liebich, Laurence Publicover, editors.
"The essays collected within this volume ask how literary practices are shaped by the experience of being at sea--and also how they forge that experience. Individual chapters explore the literary worlds of naval ships, whalers, commercial vessels, emigrant ships, and troop transports from the seventeenth to the twentieth-first century, revealing a rich history of shipboard reading, writing, and performing. Contributors are interested both in how literary activities adapt to the maritime world, and in how individual and collective shipboard experiences are structured through--and framed by--such activities."--Provided by the publisher.

Abandon ship : the real story of the sinkings in the Falklands War /Paul Brown.
"When Argentinian forces invaded the Falklands in April 1982, the British government responded by despatching a task force to the Atlantic to wrest back control of the islands. The resulting war saw modern weapon systems tested in combat for the first time, to tragic effect. In the aftermath, official documents were released, but many were heavily censored, and others withheld altogether, so that a full understanding of those events could not be gained. Drawing from recently declassified and previously unpublished reports from the official inquiry, Dr Paul Brown details the true story behind the dramatic events that led to the loss of six British ships - HMS Antelope, Ardent, Coventry and Sheffield, RFA Sir Galahad and SS Atlantic Conveyor - as well as the controversial sinking of the Argentinian cruiser ARA General Belgrano by HMS Conqueror."--Provided by the publisher.

Islands and the British Empire in the age of sail / edited by Douglas Hamilton and John McAleer.
"Islands are not just geographical units or physical facts; their importance and significance arise from the human activities associated with them. The maritime routes of sailing ships, the victualling requirements of their sailors, and the strategic demands of seaborne empires in the age of sail - as well as their intrinsic value as sources of rare commodities - meant that islands across the globe played prominent parts in imperial consolidation and expansion. This volume examines the various ways in which islands (and groups of islands) contributed to the establishment, extension, and maintenance of the British Empire in the age of sail. Thematically related chapters explore the geographical, topographical, economic, and social diversity of the islands that comprised a large component of the British Empire in an era of rapid and significant expansion. Although many of these islands were isolated rocky outcrops, they acted as crucial nodal points, providing critical assistance for ships and men embarked on the long-distance voyages that characterised British overseas activities in the period."--Provided by the publisher.

Kongo-Class Battleships : in the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II /Lars Ahlberg and Hans Lengerer.
"The battleships of the Kongo-class were the oldest, smallest, and fastest battleships in the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII. Initially classified as battle cruisers, the lead ship in the class, Kongo, was built in England just prior to WWI. The remaining three ships in the class - Haruna, Kirishima, and Hiei - were all built and completed in Japan by 1915. All four ships were highly reconfigured in the 1920s, and they were reclassified as battleships in the 1930s. The four Kongo-class ships were the most active among the 12 WWII-era Japanese battleships and saw heavy combat throughout the war in such major campaigns as Pearl Harbor, Midway, Guadalcanal, and Leyte. All four ships were sunk by Allied forces by wars end. This book features rare Japanese primary source material, including numerous photos, line schemes, and detailed charts."--Provided by the publisher.

Leaders : profiles in bravery in war and peace 1917-2020 /Robin Knight.
"Leaders collects in one place for the first time the remarkably personal and distinct stories from Pangbourne College of the courageous men and women in war and peace - accounts that are in danger of being forgotten today. Based on original research and neglected first-person accounts, it covers the period 1917-2020, with a particular emphasis on World War II, the Cold War, the Falklands War and contemporary conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Leaders documents the courageous and singular actions during a century of peacetime, as well as profiling the outstanding Second World War heroes Mike Cumberlege, David Smiley, and GTS 'Peter' Gray. A chapter recounting amazing exploits in the world of international sport adds a separate dimension to the book. Authored by a former foreign correspondent and leading corporate writer, with a Foreword by a leading naval historian, the book has a global dimension and perspective. This is reinforced by the author's years of investigatory work, his experience covering wars and his long-standing knowledge and understanding of the context."--Provided by the publisher.

100 years of cruise ships in colour / William H. Miller.
"This latest book from William H. Miller presents 150 photographs, all in rich colour, and covers a span of almost 100 years: from the 1920s to the start of the current, boom cruising decade. It includes many early, often seasonal, liners; then the more purposeful generation of 'floating hotels' that began in the 1960s. There are favourites such as the pre-World War II Franconia, Reliance, Nieuw Amsterdam and Normandie; then, in greater numbers, a 'fleet' starting from the 1950s & '60s ships such as the Caronia, Andes, Queen of Bermuda, Nassau, Italia, Bahama Star, Reina Del Mar, Oceanic, Skyward, Song of Norway, Hamburg, Royal Viking Star and Queen Elizabeth 2. Steaming into the 21st century, we see the likes of the Royal Princess, Statendam, Crystal Symphony, Oriana, Queen Mary 2, Allure of the Seas and Viking Star"--Provided by the publisher.

Chatham steamers : the paddle steamers of the London Chatham & Dover Railway /John Hendy.
"The London Chatham & Dover Railway was the operator of the prestigious Dover to Calais cross-Channel service between 1864 and 1899. During this time it underwent a huge period of change from small, wooden hulled vessels of basic design to large, fast and efficient paddle steamers of steel construction. Within the period under review, Victorian inventiveness saw the appearance of what were known as the 'peculiars'; three strange vessels of unusual design which it was hoped would save the long-suffering public from sea-sickness. As a railway company, the London Chatham & Dover Railway was frequently criticised for the poor quality of its rolling stock and its lamentable punctuality. In sharp contrast, under the control of Captain William Morgan RN, its Marine Department rose to the highest levels of efficiency and set the standard which was forthcoming throughout the entire period of railway ownership."--Provided by the publisher.

Lose your mother : a journey along the Atlantic slave route /Saidiya Hartman.
"The slave, Saidiya Hartman observes, is a stranger torn from family, home, and country. To lose your mother is to be severed from your kin, to forget your past, and to inhabit the world as an outsider. In 'Lose Your Mother', Hartman traces the history of the Atlantic slave trade by recounting a journey she took along a slave route in Ghana. There are no known survivors of Hartman's lineage, no relatives to find. She is a stranger in search of strangers, and this fact leads her into intimate engagements with the people she encounters along the way, and with figures from the past, vividly dramatising the effects of slavery on three centuries of African and American history."--Provided by the publiser.
