The Spanish Civil War at sea : dark and dangerous waters /Michael Alpert.
"The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 underlined the importance of the sea as the supply route to both General Franco's insurgents and the Spanish Republic. There were attempted blockades by Franco as well as attacks by his Italian and German allies against legitimate neutral, largely British, merchant shipping bound for Spanish Republican ports and challenges to the Royal Navy, which was obliged to maintain a heavy presence in the area. The conflict provoked splits in British public opinion. Events at sea both created and reflected the international tensions of the latter 1930s, when the policy of appeasement of Germany and Italy dissuaded Britain from taking action against those countries' activities in Spain, except to participate in a largely ineffective naval patrol to try to prevent the supply of war material to both sides. The book is based on original documentary sources in both Britain and Spain and is intended for the general reader as well as students and academics interested in the history of the 1930s, in naval matters and in the Spanish Civil War."--Provided by the publisher.

The radio officer is dead : life at sea in the Merchant Navy for a Radio Officer in the 1970s /John Brew.
"Have you ever wondered what it must have been like to live and work on a supertanker for six months or more at a time? Do you know what a Marine Radio Officer really did apart from sending messages in Morse Code? These and many other questions are answered in this thorough and readable account of the experiences of a Radio Officer who served in the Merchant Navy for a number of years in the 1970's.The ships he sailed on, the ports where he went ashore, the storms he endured, the time spent back at college and the many and varied people he worked with - all these themes are fully explored in this book. Like many other professions, that of the Marine Radio Officer fell prey to advances in communications technology. This account helps to explain what it was all about before it becomes a forgotten part of life at sea in the twentieth century."--Provided by the publisher.

Queen Elizabeth 2 : ship of legend /William H. Miller.
"The 1960s were, it was believed, the end of the era of transatlantic liners. Grand, graceful but aging luxury ships such as the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were surpassed and outmoded by the new age of jet aircraft. By 1963, airlines had secured over 95 percent of all transatlantic travellers. But looking to the future, the historic Cunard Line believed that there was room for one more, last Atlantic super ship. Thus, came the ship which became the most successful super liner of all time, the Queen Elizabeth 2. Fondly known as the QE2, she was launched and named by HM the Queen in 1967, entered service two years later and went on to sail for 39 years. She now resides in a museum and hotel like role out of Dubai. The QE2 is a lasting and fitting tribute to Cunard, to British shipping, to all ocean liners. This book has been created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Ship's maiden crossing (in May 1969) from Southampton to New York. A maritime icon, she well deserves yet another tribute!"--Provided by the publisher.

A biographical dictionary of British and Irish engravers, 1714-1820 / David Alexander.
"This biographical dictionary of engravers working on copper encompasses both those who produced fine art prints, and also those who engraved book illustrations for medical, technical and literary works, all of which played a more important part than is usually realised in spreading information in the age of Enlightenment. Some 4,000 biographical entries draw on much unpublished information, researched over four decades, notably records of apprenticeship, genealogy, insurance and bankruptcy as well as newspaper advertisements and contemporary accounts.0 This is the first reference work to cover all engravers working on copper in Britain and Ireland 1714-1820. Many biographical entries describe celebrated engravers producing "fine art" prints of paintings, which spread knowledge about living and dead artists. However, this book also builds up a more complex picture of the occupation of printmaking and includes engravers, many previously unresearched, who engraved ephemeral material, such as trade cards, bank notes, and satirical prints as well as the images that spread knowledge across literary, geographical, historical, topographical, medical and technical fields."--Provided by the publisher.

Historic ship models : of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries /Arnold and Henry Kriegstein.
"In terms of quality, historical significance and sheer numbers, the Kriegstein family's ship model collection in the United States is the finest in private hands anywhere in the world. Principally made up of official seventeenth- and eighteenth-century models in the Admiralty or Navy Board style, the collection would be the envy of any maritime museum. As the models are not on public display, this book fills the need for a detailed catalogue and visual reference with superb colour photos of all the models, both overall portraits and multiple close-ups. Apart from lengthy descriptions of these magnificent artefacts, space is devoted to how they were identified, and the valuable research done by Arnold and Henry Kriegstein, the identical twins whose shared passion brought this all together. Beyond the technicalities of the ships, the story has a human dimension in the brothers' adventures in pursuit of every model and their dogged determination to secure them against official obstruction and dubious antiques-trade practices. This is an entirely new and revised edition of 17th and 18th Century Ship Models first published in 2007, now expanded to include the additions to the collection since that date."--Provided by the publisher.

Becoming the 0.1% : thirty-four lessons from the diary of a Royal Marines Commando recruit /Gareth Timmins.
"Historical recruitment campaigns to become a Royal Marines Commando drew on a harrowing but intriguing narrative: 99.9% Need Not Apply. In 2005, only one in a thousand applications for the Royal Marines were successful in reaching the end of training, earning the Coveted Green Beret - a world renowned symbol of excellence. Becoming the 0.1% is the first-ever diary account of this training regime, charting the odds-stacked journey of Gareth Timmins, a 20-year-old recruit at the time, and providing a psychological framework for understanding how he was able to cultivate the mental strength and resilience needed to push through to success. Each week of training is accompanied by lessons on his short-comings and growth to peak performance. It uses real-life and often terrifying experiences to describe to the reader the edge you need to cultivate a 0.1% mindset and succeed in life and work."--Provided by the publisher.

Harland & Wolff and Workman, Clark : a golden age of shipbuilding in old images /Richard P. De Kerbrech and David L. Williams.
"Once, the output of such yards as Harland & Wolff and Workman, Clark was vital business of national and international importance. The Harland & Wolff yard had a long association of building ships for the White Star Line, culminating in the three largest passenger vessels of the Edwardian era, Olympic, Titanic and Britannic, as well as others for the International Mercantile Marine Co. This beautifully illustrated volume from Richard P. de Kerbrech and David L. WIlliams covers aspects of the construction and the skilled skilled craftsmen that worked on these ships, and many others, from the Edwardian era to the 1920s, revelling in atmospheric views of the boiler ship, foundry, machine ship and slipways, as well as many successful launchings. The richt array of images showcases the labour-intensive heavy engineering and shipyard practices that were once part of Belfast's major industry, now sadly no more."--Provided by the publisher.

The overseas trade of British America : a narrative history /Thomas M. Truxes.
"In a single, readily digestible, coherent narrative, historian Thomas M. Truxes presents the 300-year history of the overseas trade of British America. Born from seeds planted in Tudor England in the sixteenth century, Atlantic trade allowed the initial survival, economic expansion, and later prosperity of British America, and brought vastly different geographical regions, each with a distinctive identity and economic structure, into a single fabric. Truxes shows how colonial American prosperity was only possible because of the labor of enslaved Africans, how the colonial economy became dependent on free and open markets, and how the young United States owed its survival in the struggle of the American Revolution to Atlantic trade."--Provided by the publisher.

Calendars in the making : the origins of calendars from the Roman Empire to the later Middle Ages /edited by Sacha Stern.
"Calendars in the Making investigates the origins of calendars we are most familiar with today, yet whose early histories, in the Roman and medieval periods, are still shrouded in obscurity. It examines when the seven-day week was standardized and first used for dating and time reckoning, in Jewish and other constituencies of the Roman Empire; how the Christian liturgical calendar was constructed in early medieval Europe; and how and when the Islamic calendar was instituted. The volume includes studies of Roman provincial calendars, medieval Persian calendar reforms, and medieval Jewish calendar cycles. Edited by Sacha Stern, it presents the original research of a team of leading experts in the field. [...] Contributors are: Franðcois de Blois, Ilaria Bultrighini, Sacha Stern, Johannes Thomann, Nadia Vidro, Immo Warntjes."--

Lascars and Indian Ocean seafaring, 1780-1860 : shipboard life, unrest and mutiny /Aaron Jaffer.
"Lascars were seamen from the Indian subcontinent and other areas of the Indian Ocean region who were employed aboard European ships from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. They experienced difficult working conditions and came from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds, which created considerable scope for friction between them and their European officers. This book, based on extensive original research, examines the role of lascars employed aboard country ships, East Indiamen and other British sailing vessels. The focus is on protest in its various forms, from mild unrest to violent acts of mutiny in which lascar crews murdered officers, seized ships and then sought refuge with local rulers. It is only through descriptions of such events - found in logbooks, seafaring diaries and the East India Company's judicial records - that many aspects of lascar life at sea become visible and lascar voices can be heard. Through the study of mutiny and other forms of protest, the book provides a detailed insight into shipboard conditions amongst lascars employed during this period."--Provided by the publisher.

Space exploration / Dhara Patel.
"Space is far bigger than humanity can conceive. Although our ancestors visually examined the skies to make sense of the Universe for centuries, space exploration in its truest sense is just a moment in this historical timeline, yet it is how we've significantly improved our understanding of the cosmos. This book begins with the evolution of astronomy, including notable characters, scientific breakthroughs and pinnacle moments. It delves into the development of robotic spacecraft and what uncrewed and crewed missions above and beyond our planet have uncovered. It questions how this knowledge will aid us in our future space adventures, and highlights the myriad questions that remain unanswered. From stargazing to stepping on the Moon, and from space stations to the prospect of commercial spaceflight, learn more in Dhara Patel's concise history of space exploration."

Seaforth world naval review 2022 / edited by Conrad Waters.
"For over a decade this annual has provided an authoritative summary of all that has happened in the naval world in the previous twelve months, combining regional surveys with one-off major articles on noteworthy new ships and other important developments. Besides the latest warship projects, it also looks at wider issues of significance to navies, such as aviation and weaponry, and calls on expertise from around the globe to give a balanced picture of what is going on and to interpret its significance. This year the 'Significant Ships' series includes its first detailed analysis of a Russian design, the Steregushchiy class corvettes now being built in sizeable numbers. Two contrasting OPVs, the French-designed Bouchard class for the Argentine Navy and the British Batch 2 'Rivers', are also covered, along with an assessment of the US Navy's new Ship to Shore Connector, a replacement for the LCAC amphibious assault hovercraft. Technology subjects include electro-optics at sea, new 'off-board' mine clearance systems, and the annual review of world naval aviation. In this issue the in-depth Fleet Reviews focus on the changing role of the Skri Lankan Navy, qualitative improvements in the Spanish Navy, and the latest British naval developments. Now well established as the only affordable annual overview of its type, World Naval Reviews is essential reading for anyone with an interest in contemporary maritime affairs, whether enthusiast or defence professional."--Provided by the publisher.

American yachts in naval service : a history from the Colonial Era to World War II /Kenneth Howard Goldman.
"Before there was a U.S. Navy, several Colonial navies were all-volunteer -- both the crews and the vessels. From its beginnings through World War II, the Navy has relied on civilian sailors and their fast vessels to fill out its ranks of small combatants. Beginning with the birth of the yacht in 17th century Netherlands, this illustrated history traces the development of yacht racing, the advent of combustion-engine power and the contribution privately owned vessels have made to national defense. Vessels conscripted during the Civil War served both the Union and Confederacy -- sometimes changing sides after capture. The first USS Wanderer saw the slave trade from both sides of the law. Aboard the USS Sylph, Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine fought the Third Reich's U-boats under sail. USS Sea Cloud made history as the first racially integrated ship in the Navy, three years before President Truman desegregated the military."--Provided by the publisher.

Migration studies and colonialism / Lucy Mayblin and Joe Turner.
"The history of migration is deeply entangled with colonialism. To this day, colonial logics continue to shape the dynamics of migration as well as the responses of states to those arriving at their borders. And yet migration studies has been surprisingly slow to engage with colonial histories in making sense of migratory phenomena today. This book starts from the premise that colonial histories should be central to migration studies and explores what it would mean to really take that seriously. To engage with this task, Lucy Mayblin and Joe Turner argue that scholars need not forge new theories but must learn from and be inspired by the wealth of literature that already exists across the world. Providing a range of inspiring and challenging perspectives on migration, the authors' aim is to demonstrate what paying attention to colonialism, through using the tools offered by postcolonial, decolonial and related scholarship, can offer those studying international migration today. Offering a vital intervention in the field, this important book asks scholars and students of migration to explore the histories and continuities of colonialism in order to better understand the present."--Provided by the publisher.

Latitude : the astonishing adventure that shaped the world /Nicholas Crane.
"An almost forgotten moment in history, a tale for our times, this is the true story of the mission to discover the shape of the Earth. They knew the world wasn't a sphere. Either it stretched at the poles or it bulged at the equator. But which? They needed to know because accurate maps saved lives at sea and made money on land. But measuring the Earth was so difficult that most thought it impossible. The world's first international team of scientists was sent to a continent of unmapped rainforests and ice-shrouded volcanoes where they attempted to measure the length on the ground of one degree of latitude. Beset by egos and disease, storms and earthquakes, mutiny and murder, they struggled for ten years to reach the single figure they sought. Latitude is an epic story of survival and science set in mountain camps and remote observatories. It is also a story of exploration in which an unruly gaggle of misfits made breakthroughs in rubber and platinum, gravity and fogbows, quinine and Inca archaeology. A breathtaking tale of courage in adversity, it is celebrated today as the first modern exploring expedition."--Provided by the publisher.

Nothing can stop us : Tristan da Cunha's 1961 volcanic eruption and how its people handled their future /Richard Grundy & Neil Robson.
"For centuries Tristan da Cunha, the world's remotest inhabited island, has seen crises and calamities, but none of them equalled the horror of the day in October 1961 when, after months of tremors, the volcano erupted adjcent to the settlement of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Within hours the tiny community was forced to abandon its homes and become a group of famous refugees. Thus began the Tristan islanders' long voyage to Britain and a new way of living. But life in England did not turn out to be ideal, and after much searching of hearts, most of the community decided to leave progress behind and make their way back 'home'. Filled with thrilling and poignant detail this book tells the story of the dilemmas behind that decision to return and the many trials that had to be faced back on the island. Later decades brought prosperity, but Tristan has not proved to be a Utopia either, and the authors close their account by outlining some of the challenges the community is going to have to face in the future." --provided by the Publishers.

Ports in the medieval European Atlantic : shipping, transport and labour /edited by Ana Marâia Rivera Medina.
"This book responds to the increasing interest of maritime historians in the study of ports. These enclaves offer significant insights into a variety of subjects, including ships and shipping; trade, commodities, and consumption patterns; the economy, society and culture of port workers and port communities; and systems of regional and international integration. Based on extensive research in a wide range of European archives, the book provides much detail on the nature of ports in the medieval period, especially on the crucial subject of the operation of ports. Covering a range of ports in France, Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands, the book contains a wealth of original research findings. It will be particularly welcomed by English-speaking scholars and others outside the region analysed, since it gives access to non-English-language archives, thereby considerably enriching the study of medieval ports beyond ports in Britain and Ireland."--

Mediterranean naval battles that changed the world / Quentin Russell.
"Focusing on seven decisive naval engagements from the Greek defeat of the Persians at Salamis in the fifth century BC to the Siege of Malta during the Second World War, this book tells the story of the Mediterranean as a theatre of war at sea. Each of these fiercely fought battles were to change the balance of power and shape the course of history. Before telling the story of each battle in detail the history of the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean and the effect of the development of naval architecture and design on the outcomes is outlined: Lepanto was the last major battle fought between galleys; Navarino was the last major battle to be fought entirely by sailing ships; and Cape Matapan (where a young Duke of Edinburgh saw action) was the first operation to exploit the breaking of the Italian naval Enigma codes. The battles included are: Salamis (480 BC), Actium (31 BC), Lepanto (1571), the Nile (aka Aboukir Bay, 1798), Navarino (1827), Cape Matapan 1941 and the Siege of Malta 1940-42."--Provided by the publisher.

Herbert Ponting : Scott's Antarctic photographer and pioneer filmmaker /Anne Strathie.
"Herbert Ponting (1870-1935) was young bank clerk when he bought an early Kodak compact camera. By the early 1900s, he was living in California, working as a professional photographer, known for stereoview and enlarged images of America, Japan and the Russo-Japanese war. In 1909, back in Britain, Ponting was recruited by Captain Robert Scott as photographer and filmmaker for his second Antarctic expedition. In 1913, following the deaths of Scott and his South Pole party companions, Ponting's images of Antarctica were widely published, and he gave innovative 'cinema-lectures' on the expedition. When war broke out, Ponting's offers to serve as a photographer or correspondent were declined, but in 1918 he, Ernest Shackleton and other Antarctic veterans joined a government-backed Arctic expedition. During the economically depressed 1920s and 1930s, Ponting wrote his Antarctic memoir, re-worked his Antarctic films into silent and 'talkie' versions and worked on inventions. Like others, he struggled financially but was sustained by correspondence with photographic equipment magnate George Eastman, a late-life romance with singer Glae Carrodus and knowing that his images of Antarctica had secured his place in photographic and filmmaking history."--Provided by the publisher.

Captain John Smith, adventurer : Piracy, Pocahontas and Jamestown /R.E. Pritchard.
"Captain John Smith is best remembered for his association with Pocahontas, but this was only a small part of an extraordinary life filled with danger and adventure. As a soldier, he fought the Turks in Eastern Europe, where he beheaded three Turkish adversaries in duels. He was sold into slavery, then murdered his master to escape. He sailed under a pirate flag, was shipwrecked and marched to the gallows to be hanged, only to be reprieved at the eleventh hour. All this before he was thirty years old. He was one of the founders of the English settlement at Jamestown, where he faced considerable danger from the natives as well as from within the faction-ridden settlement itself. In fact, were it not for Smith's leadership, the Jamestown colony would surely have failed. Yet Smith was a far more ambitious explorer and soldier of fortune than these tales suggest. This swashbuckling Elizabethan adventurer was resourceful, intelligent and outspoken, with a vision of what America could become. In this riveting book, R.E. Pritchard tells the rip-roaring story of a remarkable man who refused to give in."--Provided by the publisher.

Black and British : a forgotten history/David Olusoga.
"In Black and British, David Olusoga tells the richt and revealing story of the long relationship between the British Isles and the people of Africa and the Caribbean. It is a story that reaches back to Roman Britain, Elizabethan 'blackmoors' and the global slave-trading empire. Black Britons fought at Trafalgar and in both world war, while the great industrial boom of the nineteenth century was built on American slavery. This edition, fully revised and updated, features a new chapter encompassing the Windrush scandal and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, events that put black British history at the centre of urgent national debate. Black and British is vivid confirmation that black history can no longer be kept separate and marginalized. It is woven into the cultural and economic histories of the nation and it belongs to us all."--Provided by the publisher.

Maritime Kent through the ages : gateway to the sea /edited by Stuart Bligh, Elizabeth Edwards, Sheila Sweetinburgh.
"Kent, with its long coastline and its important geopolitical position close to London and continental Europe, and on major trading routes between Britain and the wider world, has had a very significant maritime history. This book covers a wide range of topics relating to that history from the earliest times to the present day. It sets Kent's varied coastline and waters in their geological and geographical context, showing how erosion and sediment deposition have contributed to the changing nature of maritime activities and populations. It examines Kent's strategic role in the defence of the country with the development and redevelopment of coastal defences, including four naval dockyards. It goes on to consider the supporting industries which grew up around the coastline, those which supplied raw materials and agricultural products from the county's hinterland, and its wider national and international trading links. It also discusses the diverse coastal communities of Kent and how they have changed in response to the demands of defence, trade, and changing population and migration patterns. In addition, the book includes detailed case studies which explore particular subject areas as exemplars of the major themes covered by the book."--Provided by the publisher.
