Operation Pedestal : the fleet that battled to Malta 1942 /Max Hastings. Sietas and its ships / Bernard McCall. "The shipyard of J J Sietas is arguably one of the best-known in northern Europe. It was founded in 1653 and from its inception, the company was continuously owned by the founding family. This was the ninth generation by 2009. The first vessels were made out of wood but this changed to steel from the early 20th century. By 2009 the shipyard was experiencing financial difficulties due to rising steel prices, the rapid fall in demand for container ships and miscalculation fo costs. The global recession led to cancelled orders and the shipyard's largest creditor, HSH Nordbank, took over management in early March 2009, the first time the company had been managed by someone outside of the founding family since 1635. The yard continued to experience financial problems until April 2014 when it became part of the Pella group, a Russian company owned by the Tsaturof family. They yard is now known as Pella Sietas Werft. It was in the mid-1950s when production was starting to increase that a decision was made to classify the vessels according to types. At first letters were used, so in 1955 six examples of the Type HG were built, named after the Hertha Gerdau. Type A and Type F also appeared before it was decided to adopt a numerical scheme beginning with Karin in 1958. This scheme has continued to the present day. It should be understood that the yard was building several different types at the same time. Especially in the 1970s, it was unable to keep up with demand and several vessels were subcontracted to the Norderwerft shipyard in Hamburg. In this book we shall be concentrating on cargo ships but other types will also appear to illustrate the variety of ships that were built. British naval trawlers and drifters in two world wars : from the John Lambert collection /edited and introduced by Steve R. Dunn. "John Lambert was a renowned naval draughtsman, whose plans were highly valued for their accuracy and detail by modelmakers and enthusiasts. By the time of his death in 2016 he had produced over 850 sheets of drawings, many of which have never been published. These were acquired by Seaforth and this title is the fourth of a planned series of albums on selected themes, reproducing complete sheets at a large page size, with expert commentary and captioning. Trawlers and drifters served in both world wars in their thousands; and, in their tens of thousands, so did their fishermen crews. Indeed, these humble craft were the most numerous vessel type used by the Royal Navy in both wars, and were the answer to the strategic or tactical conundrums posed by new technology of mines and submarines. In his accompanying text, Steve Dunn examines the ships themselves, their design, construction, arming, operations and development; and he also relates how the trawlermen and skippers, from the age-old fishing ports of Grimsby, Hull, Lowestoft ad Great Yarmouth, Aberdeen and Fleetwood, came to be part of the Royal Navy, and describes the roles they played, the conditions they served under and the bravery they showed. The book takes some 30 large sheets of drawings which John Lambert completed of these vessels and divides into two sections. The first part tells how the fishing fleet came to be an integral part of the Royal Navy's pre-1914 plans and details some of the activities and actions of trawlers and drifters at war in 1914-18. And the second investigates the armed fishing fleet in the struggle of 1939-45. Pesca : the history of Compania Argentina de Pesca Sociedad Anonima of Buenos Aires ; an account of the pioneer modern whaling company in the Antarctic ;Ian Hart. "There are many companies in the world that have pursued the whale in modern times, but none was more important and fascinating than the Compania Argentina de Pesca of Buenos Aires. Founded following an Antarctic expedition mishap in 1904, and the initiative of the Norwegian whaling and sealing Captain C.A. Larsen, Pesca (as it was commonly known), was the first whaling company to commercially hunt whales in the Southern Ocean. It was, intriguingly, registered in the Republic of Argentina, a country with no history of whaling, with Argentine directors, supported by a commercial bank of Swedish and German origins; it then established its working base on the uninhabited and British-claimed sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia with a workforce largely drawn from Norway and Sweden. The formation of this whaling company and its cosmopolitan mix was unique in the annals of whaling history, which has made it an especially compelling subject for research and investigation. Its activities encouraged exploration of the Antarctic, triggered the beginnings and subsequent expansion of the great southern whaling industry and brought to the fore not only the regulation of the industry but the question of sovereignty in the Antarctic. This much expanded second edition includes much new information and further photographs, courtesy of contct with yet more of those who served the company in one capacity or another, and the opportunity to delve into further company reports, but a feel for whaling and its consequences for both humans and mammals in the Southern Ocean. French warships in the age of steam 1859-1914 : design, construction, careers and fates /Stephen S. Roberts. "In 1859 the French navy was at a high point, having fought alongside the British in the Crimean War and developed a formidable fleet of fast wooden-hulled steam ships of the line. But in that very year the world's navies had to start over again when French naval architect Dupuy de Lãome introduced the ironclad battleship. The French navy then went through three tumultuous phases. In the 1860s and 1870s it focused on building a new traditionally-structured fleet in which wooden-hulled battleships gave way to iron and steel ships with massive guns and armour. In the 1880s and 1890s this effort was disrupted by a vigorous contest between battleship sailors and advocates of fast steel cruisers and small torpedo craft, leaving France by the end of the 1890s with few new battleships (none as large as the best foreign ships) but some two hundred torpedo boats. The Fashoda crisis in 1898 revealed the weakness of the French navy and between 1900 and 1914 the French focused on building a strong battle fleet. In 1914 this fleet remained well behind those of Britain and Germany in numbers, but taken individually French warships remained among the best in the world. This book is the first comprehensive listing in English of the over 1400 warships that were added to the official French navy fleet list between 1 January 1859 and World War I. It includes everything from the largest battleships to a small armoured gunboat that looked like a floating egg. The ships are listed in three separate parts to keep contemporary ships together and then by ship type and class. For each class the book provides a design history explaining why the ships were built, substantial technical characteristics for the ships as completed and after major reconstructions, and selected career milestones including the ultimate fate of each ship. Ju 87 Stuka vs Royal Navy carriers : Mediterranean /Robert Forsyth "Ju 87 dive-bombers, originally developed for pin-pointing bombing missions against land targets and Allied naval vessels were deployed by both the Luftwaffe and the Regia Aeronautica against the Allied forces. Included in such a target were perhaps the greatest prize of all for a Stuka pilot: a British aircraft carrier. This superbly illustrated book looks at the duel between the Ju 87 Stuka and the aircraft carriers of the Royal Navy. Children at sea : lives shaped by the waves /Vyvyen Brendon. "Children at sea faced even more drastic separations from loved ones than those sent 'home' from India or those packed off to English boarding schools at the age of seven, the subjects of Vyvyen Brendon's previous books. "The Power and the Glory tells the story of royal fleet reviews from the fifteenth century to the 2005 International Fleet Review, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar, which was the final exhibition of that pomp and ceremony that had been an essential if irregular expression of naval strength for more than 500 years. Whether to impress or deter a foreign power, often when mobilising for war, provide reassurance for domestic consumption or celebrate a sovereign s accession, royal naval reviews were an integral part of political positioning and national pride. At these reviews, particularly during the eras of British naval dominance, potential allies or enemies were invited to marvel at British prowess, while the British public could revel in the country s naval superiority; advances in technology and ship design were showcased, often for commercial benefit, and homage paid to kings and queens at the head of their fleets. Starting with an examination of the reasons for Britain s need for and close association with a navy, the author goes on to explain the historical, political and technological context for British fleet reviews from the time of Edward III onwards. Japanese carriers and victory in the Pacific : the Yamamoto Option /Martin Stansfeld. "'Japanese Carriers and Victory in the Pacific' focuses on the pre-war debate between building a new generation of super-battleships or adopting aircraft carriers as the capital ships' of the future. An Asian power in particular sees carriers as a way of challenging the USA and the colonial empires initially losing the contest yet coming out all right in the Cold War aftermath. Martin Stansfeld examines the much overlooked genesis of Japan's so-called shadow fleet that was a secret attempt to bring about parity with the US in carriers -- albeit only with slower speed conversions of liners and auxiliaries but along with the super-battleships cluttered launch facilities when these could have been devoted to keel-up fast fleet carrier production. This first analytical look at what major launch facilities were available in Japan shows that the Imperial Japanese Navy could have doubled its fast carrier fleet thereby able to give sufficient air cover for an invasion of Hawaii rather than just the raid on Pearl Harbor, but only providing nobody noticed they were building all these carriers. This is shown to have been entirely possible given the IJN's extraordinary success at covering up their super-battleship and shadow fleet production. This secret fast carrier fleet programme is given the name 'phantom fleet' by Stansfeld who proceeds to demonstrate how the strategy of the Pacific War would have been transformed.
