P34409; A close view of the sterns, taken from off the starboard quarter, of the Antung trader type junks 2991 and 1792 moored with other junks at Tsingtao. They both have a ladder hanging over the stern rail and their mizzen sails are stowed fore and aft. Their mast tops are out of the picture. The photographer was in the area between the periods 22 July to 13 August 1937 and 17 August to 5 September 1937. Negatives numbers N34408 and N34411 also include junk 1792.

P34300; A close detail of the stemhead of an Indian kotia type dhow at Colombo, Ceylon. viewed from the starboard side. The iron anchor is lashed to the stem and the stemhead is ornately carved. The photographer was taking passage on the Royal Navy heavy cruiser Cumberland (1926) from Singapore to the U.K. at the time.

P34345; A close view of the sails of a fully rigged model of the Pechili trader type junk number 1510, taken from off the starboard quarter looking forward and to port, at the Roman Catholic Church at Liu Kung Tao, near Weihaiwei. The model has a quarter sail, a port side studding sail, a mainsail, a main topsail, a staysail and a foresail set. It is now part of the NMM collection with the reference AAE0160. She has two tall masts with an elongated rectangular sail hoisted to full height on each mast. Each sail has 18 bamboo battens. The junk has a leeboard deployed amidships. A two masted junk and a deep sea cargo steamship are in the background. Negative number P34467 is also of this vessel.

The photographer is just to starboard of the centreline at the aft end of the foredeck looking aft and slightly to port showing the hand operated anchor windlass in the foreground. Two cargo hatches and a capstan are between the windlass and the mainmast. The foresail is untidily stowed on its lower boom. The aft end of the mainsail is covered with matting. The lashed tiller can be seen in the foreground and a number of the crew are in the waist and on top of the chart house. The tops of the masts are out of the picture. Negative number P34439 was taken on board the same junk.

The transom is gaily painted with representations of a volcano, flowers and leaves. The photographer was at Singapore on four occasions during 1937 and 1938: 9 April to 1 May 1937, 13 January to 26 February 1938, 9 March to 23 March 1938 and 17 September to 30 September 1938.
