Medal commemorating the voyage to Guinea, 1681. Obverse: An African man kneeling on a beach, holding a basket containing ivory. A fort (left), partly hiding a ship flying the Brandenburg flag. Ships sailing away (right). Above, out of the clouds, cherub heads blowing wind. Legend: 'COEPTA . NAVIGATIO . AD ORAS . GVINAE . AN . MDCLXXXI . FELICITER.' (Navigation to the coasts of Guinea happily begun 1681.) Reverse: A three-masted ship beflagged under sail, cherubs above blowing a favourable wind. Legend: 'DEO . DVCE . AVSPICYS . SERENISSIMI . ELECTORIS . BRANDENBVRGICI.' (Under the guidance of God and the auspices of the most Serene Elector of Brandenburg.) A.D. Meyer says that although unsigned this was certainly struck in Emden.
