Pocket telescope
This achromatic telescope has a mahogany barrel and four brass draw tubes. The other brass fittings include a sliding eyepiece cover, but the objective lens cap is now missing. It is contained in a wooden box.
An inscription on the smallest draw tube identifies the maker as 'K McCulloch London', presumably Kenneth McCulloch, an east London maker in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A second inscription on the largest draw tube states that it was 'Presented to Mid. John Pollard RN by the officers of HMS Victory for services rendered 1805', while a handwritten label inside the lid of the accompanying box records that 'Mid. John Pollard RN shot the Swiss sharp shooter at 1-30 who killed Lord Nelson. Oct 1805'. There is also an inscription on a medallion on the box lid that reads 'England expects that every man will do his duty, relic of HMS Victory'. This provenance has not, however, been confirmed.
