By Mariana Voda My name is Mariana and I volunteer with the Cutty Sark Studio Theatre Marketing Team. I wanted a ship since I read Robinson Crusoe and Peter Pan - in that order. Then proceeded to watch a series of films about pirates, and the Napoleonic wars, and the rest is history. Cutty Sark is a magical space to work, for where else would you find stories of the sea, the myth and the lore of witches, brought together in an object that changed the life of all those involved in its history? It is ‘the stuff that dreams are made on’, a safe womb that to this day hums the song of the sea, allowing people to travel back in time through its sounds and imagery, and the stories told in its hull.
My day involves me helping promote the events held at the ship: music and comedy nights, theatre, and tours. I may not be at the rigging, but I’d like to imagine that the emails and the spread-sheets are like the ropes and the sails that help ‘sail’ the ship. My favourite part is working with people who put a lot of care in their work and take pride in it. The team at Cutty Sark is what makes my day fun and what breathes life into the ship and gives it its welcoming character. I have not yet had a dull day, and have yet to meet a face I didn’t like at the ship - and I can tell you, not all the figureheads are as good looking as Nannie Dee. --- Our pre-Edinburgh theatre season, including performances by Josh Widdicombe and Katherine Ryan, launches on Friday 24 July.
