Join us for a weekend of inspiring events that explore our deep and enduring connection to the Moon through art, music, poetry and science. 

From creative performances to hands-on activities, this celebration brings together diverse voices and perspectives, highlighting cultural and global connections to our closest celestial neighbour. 

This special weekend is part of the programme marking the 350th anniversary of the Royal Observatory Greenwich and is held in conjunction with NASA’s international Observe the Moon Night and World Space Week.

Please note

Activities on Saturday take place at the Old Royal Naval College and activities on Sunday are at the National Maritime Museum, as the Astronomy Centre and Peter Harrison Planetarium at the Royal Observatory are closed for an exciting redevelopment project.

Celestial Harmonies performed by Gloriana Choir

Old Royal Naval College Chapel | 2.30pm and 4pm | Free, but you must book a place

Join us at the Old Royal Naval College as we hear celestial music about the Moon, stars and planets sung by the fantastic Gloriana choir.

Founded in 2016, this all-female choir is led by Director Deborah Miles-Johnson, a singer in the Royal Opera House and previous member of the BBC Singers. The choir's many performances have included singing within Rothschild and Co's Sky Pavilion and performing for Classic FM.

Celestial Reflections: An Evening of Poetry and Moongazing

Painted Hall and Upper Lawns of the Old Royal Naval College | 7pm-9:30pm | Ticketed, bookings opening soon | Recommended ages 16+ 

Price: £30 Adults, £20 Students

Join us for an exciting, interactive poetry performance inspired by the Moon and the cosmos, featuring celebrated poets Dom Conlon, Kate Wakeling, and A.F. Harrold, each bringing their own unique voice and perspective to our closest celestial neighbour.

The evening includes two sets of performances with a break in between, giving you the chance to observe the Moon through telescopes with the expert guidance of the Flamsteed Astronomy Society and astronomers from the Royal Observatory Greenwich. Whether skies are clear or cloudy, they will be on hand to answer your questions and share tips on observing the night sky.

Discover Sundays

10am– 4pm | Learning Space at the National Maritime Museum | Free, drop-in

Join artist Love Hannington for a special lunar edition of the National Maritime Museum's regular Discover Sundays workshops, where you’ll craft your very own moon mask inspired by star stories from across the African continent.   

Lunar objects

10am– 4pm | Propeller Space at the National Maritime Museum | Free, drop-in

Meet our Royal Observatory Explainers as they explain everything from the phases of the Moon to the rise and fall of the tides in a series of astronomy demonstrations.

See and touch an exciting array of handling objects connected to the Moon, from lunar globes and navigational instruments to real lunar meteorites.

Audiomoves

11am– 3pm | Group Space at the National Maritime Museum | Free but you must book a place | Recommended ages 4+

Our Royal Observatory astronomers have been working with Peut-étre Theatre practitioners on Audiomoves, space-themed podcast episodes designed to encourage children to move, dance and use their imagination with a screen-free activity.

Moon Rhymes: Interactive Family Poetry Workshops with Dom Conlon and Kate Wakeling

10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm | Seminar Room at the National Maritime Museum | Ticketed | Recommended ages 7+ | 10% discount for Members

Join poets Dom Conlon and Kate Wakeling for playful and creative workshops exploring the Moon through poetry. Each session offers a unique take on cosmic creativity, inviting families to craft their own imaginative lunar-inspired poems. No experience needed - just curiosity and a love of words!

What is International Observe the Moon Night?

International Observe the Moon Night is an occasion set up by NASA to bring people together worldwide to celebrate, learn about and observe our moon.

NASA says, "Everyone on Earth is invited to learn about lunar science and exploration, take part in celestial observations, and honor cultural and personal connections to the Moon. We encourage everyone to interpret “observe” broadly!"

What is World Space Week?

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the humanity.

World Space Week is marked by space education and outreach events held by a wide range of organisations, from space agencies to aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs.

How do I get to these events?

This event takes place at the Old Royal Naval College on Saturday 4 October and at the National Maritime Museum on Sunday 5 October. Both sites are at the heart of Maritime Greenwich.

Some of the events are free, drop-in sessions, and for these you can just turn up on the day. 

Others require you to book a free ticket to secure your place.
