In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
I find from the representation of Mr George Everett dated 28 August, that Thomas Reynalds was indicted on 31 March last at Maidstone for embezzling the King's naval stores as was Henry Arthur, both sworn against by George Everett and William Tumbar his assistant. I desired Mr Everett to assist in apprehending these persons but he refused saying it was not his business. Prosecution was not commenced because of the small value of the theft, under 20 shillings, and to proceed in my opinion would put His Majesty to unnecessary expense. As to Mr Everett's excuses for not attending court for want of due encouragement, these are groundless having hitherto been paid for the same and had received due respect untill he was discovered to have concealed certain people and had refused to give evidence. Signed Edward Whitaker, Navy Board official.
