The CASTLE OF LIYD sails to Ethiopia, but a number of men die from the bad food. They anchor near the Cape of Good Hope. Barlow describes the local people, their clothing, diet and lack of religion; also the wild animals. They hear of a woman who recently gave birth on a Dutch ship to a 'monster', which was drowned in a tub of water. Barlow saw it and drew it.
