Notebook and related papers of Joan Davidson

Notebook of three accounts dictated to Joan Davidson by her father, Lieutenant Commander Thomas Turnbull Laurenson. Includes handwritten covering letter, Mar 1988 two pages) and her handwritten transcript of the notebook contents (seventeeen pages). Also typed version of the latter, probably done by RMG staff, as acquisition reference included (MS87/085). Titles of three accounts are 'Battle of Hankow' [Hankou], 'A hot night in Smyrna [Izmir] Harbour' and 'Antarctic'. Also includes postcard of Hankow [Hankou] Waterworks, dated 23 Oct 1911, with handwritten details on reverse of its part in the Hankow [Hankou] incident.

Administrative / biographical background
The Battle of Yangxia was the largest military engagement of the Xinhai Revolution and was fought from 18 Oct to 1 Dec 1911, between the revolutionaries of the Wuchang Uprising and the loyalist armies of the Qing dynasty. The battle was waged in Hankou and Hanyang, which along with Wuchang collectively form the tri-cities of Wuhan in central China.
