Photographs.

Large number of photographs and negatives of and on-board the PENANG. LAI/3/5 is not available for viewing or copying due to sensitive materials and information.

Administrative / biographical background
Photographs and negatives relating to Dorothy Laird’s time aboard the PENANG in 1938. Photographs taken by the crew of one of the last commercial merchant sailing ships, of her fellow crew members and the vessel herself. Laird identified many of the images to accompany her unpublished autobiographical account of the voyage, “Sailed Foreign”. They are a photographic record of voyages on ‘tall ships’ in the early 20th Century. They cover topics such as the recovery of spars when the ship was dismasted, other sailing ships that were passed on the voyage, activity on board and a few topographical images.
