Hawker, Edward, Admiral, 1782-1860.

This sub-collection consists of logs covering Hawker's service afloat, two order books for HMS BELLEROPHON (1786) and HMS BRITANNIA (1820) and a notebook of vessels captured 1805 to 1806. There is also a letterbook of his father, Captain James Hawker (1730-1786), kept during his command of HMS IRIS (captured 1777), on the North America and West Indies Station, 1779 to 1781.

Administrative / biographical background
Hawker, son of Captain James Hawker, went to sea in 1793. He joined HMS SWIFTSURE (1787), home waters, in 1794, commanded by his brother-in-law, Captain Charles Boyles (q.v.), and was also with him in the West Indies when he was promoted to lieutenant in HMS RAISONNABLE (1768). Again in the West Indies, Hawker commanded the prize brig, LA MIGNONNE (captured 1803), and in 1804, having been promoted to captain, was appointed to HMS THESEUS (1786), flagship of the station. He then commanded HMS TARTAR (1801), 1805 to 1806, and the frigate HMS MELAMPUS (1785), 1806 to 1811, on the North America and West Indies Stations, engaged against the enemy's privateers. From 1813 to 1815, in HMS BELLEROPHON (1786) and then in HMS SALISBURY (1814), he was flag-captain to Sir Richard Goodwin Keats (q.v.), Commander-in-Chief, Newfoundland. His last appointments were to HMS BRITANNIA (1820), 1828 to 1829, and HMS ST. VINCENT (1815), 1829 to 1830, flagships at Plymouth to the Earl of Northesk (1758-1831). He became rear-admiral in 1837, vice-admiral in 1847 and admiral in 1853.
