Boyles, Sir Charles, Vice-Admiral, 1756-1816.
This sub-collection consists of two letterbooks, 1810 to 1811, including copies of letters to the Sicilian court.
Administrative / biographical background
Boyles became a lieutenant in 1777 and a captain in 1790. During the French wars he served in the West Indies, the Channel and the Mediterranean. He became a rear-admiral in 1809 and from 1810 to 1812 served in the Mediterranean, with HMS TRIDENT (1768) and then HMS CANOPUS (captured 1798) as his flagship. He became a vice-admiral in 1814.
