Biographical Index of British sundial makers from the seventh century to 1920
The aim of this index is to provide a reference list of known sundial makers for those who come across a signed sundial and for those interested in the history of gnomonics. The introduction gives a brief summary of the development of sundials from the early 'fixed', 'scratch' or 'mass' dials to the development of the dipleidoscope and then heliochronometers, the radio and time pips in 1924. A list of abbreviations used for frequently cited published sources, a general bibliography and a list of works on dialling are followed by a biographical index by century and a general index of names.
