Port Line : incorporating James P Corry & Co, Thomas B Royden & Co, Wm. Milburn & Co, G D Tyser & Co, The Commonwealth and Dominion Line Ltd
In 1914, James P Corry & Co, Thomas B Royden & Co, William Milburn & Co and G D Tyser & Co, which were all engaged in trade with New Zealand and Australia, combined to form the Commonwealth & Dominion Line. Acquired by Cunard in 1916, the Line was renamed as the Port Line in 1937. In 1967, facing competition from containerisation and air travel, the Blue Star and Port Line fleets were combined under the management of Blue Star Port Lines (Management). The arrangement was terminated in 1973, marking the end of Port Line as an operational shipping company. Histories and fleet lists are provided for the Commonwealth & Dominion and Port Lines and each of the predecessor companies. Appendices cover the operations of the Montreal Australia New Zealand (MANZ) Line, the loss of HMS Port Napier, ship machinery and refrigeration, alterations and losses incurred as a result of the Second World War. Illustated throughout with photographs of vessels and corporate documentation.
