Akarana

The story of the Akarana, the restored racing yacht given to Australia by New Zealand as its Bicentennial gift in 1987. Built in 1888 by Robert Logan to demonstrate the skills available in New Zealand and using native timbers, the yacht competed in the Centennial Regatta in Melbourne the same year. Akarana remained in Australia until 1987 when she returned to New Zealand for restoration prior to her relaunch in Sydney Harbour in 1988. The author covers the development of early yacht racing in New Zealand and Australia, the design and building of the Akarana, ownership between 1888-1988, the restoration project, biographical details of the Logan family, and the the Bicentennial regatta itself.
