The Gulf Tanker War: Iran and Iraq's Maritime Swordplay is an analysis of the strategies undertaken by Iraq and Iran during The Tanker War phase of the Iran-Iraq War. The first half of the book analyses the early stages of the conflict, which lasted from 1980-1988, as well as the build up to Iraq's adoption of the Tanker War strategy in 1984. The second section of the book analyses the factors which led to Iraq's adoption of the Tanker War strategy, its effectiveness as a military strategy and its impact on the conflict, as well as providing a narrative of events during this phase of the conflict. The author makes extensive use of primary sources such as interviews with Iranians and Iraqis involved in the conflict, as well as producing detailed graphs and charts when analysing tankers sunk during the conflict. She also details an emperical study she undertook analysing the effectiveness of the Tanker War strategy, and has a detailed conclusion and appendix section where she outlines her findings and lists her sources in full.
