An account of Admiral Richard E. Byrd's expedition to Antarctica in 1928 drawing on Byrd's private papers. The expedition's achievements included the first flight over the South Pole, the discovery of new territory, the pioneering use of long-range radio and snowmobiles, and the gathering of valuable geological information and data on weather, geomagnetism and the aurora. Byrd's work helped to move antarctic exploration into an age of more advanced technology.
