Sir Charles Raymond of Valentines and the East India Company / Georgina Green.
"Meticulously researched, Georgina Green's Sir Charles Raymond of Valentines and the East India Company offers readers a detailed biography of a successful eighteenth-century sea captain whose Oriental fortune laid the foundations for domestic comfort and commercial achievement at home in Georgian Essex. Raymond's later life in the City of London managing ships for the East India Company, as a director of the Sun Fire Office and later as a banker, earned him respect and a baronetcy. Living at Valentines in modern day Ilford, Raymond's success attracted other retired captains - relations and business colleagues, to live nearby in Ilford and Woodford. Without these captains who carried their cargo the East India Company would never have become a major force in India. The book includes new material about voyages at sea, the risks and rewards, backed up by statistical information. Readers will encounter Georgian Britain in the round. Trade, politics, marriage, culture, business, sociability, neighbourhood and material life were intertwined in the life of Sir Charles Raymond, just as they were woven through the foundation of Britain's Indian empire. Georgina Green has been well known as a local historian in Redbridge and the Epping Forest area for over 30 years and has written several other books about the history of the area."--Provided by the publisher.

Richard Wilson and the transformation of European landscape painting / edited by Martin Postle and Robin Simon.
"Long known as the father of British landscape painting, Richard Wilson (1713?1782) was in fact at the heart of a profound conceptual shift in European landscape art. This magnificently illustrated volume not only situates Wilson?s art at the beginning of a native tradition that would lead to John Constable and J. M. W. Turner, but compellingly argues that in Rome during the 1750s Wilson was part of an international group of artists who reshaped the art of Europe. Rooted in the work of great seventeenth-century masters such as Claude Lorrain but responding to the early stirrings of neoclassicism, Wilson forged a highly original landscape vision that through the example of his own works and the tutelage of his pupils in Rome and later in London would establish itself throughout northern Europe."--Provided by the publisher.

Pirate nests and the rise of the British Empire, 1570-1740 / Mark G. Hanna.
"Analyzing the rise and subsequent fall of international piracy from the perspective of colonial hinterlands, Mark G. Hanna explores the often overt support of sea marauders in maritime communities from the inception of England's burgeoning empire in the 1570s to its administrative consolidation by the 1740s. Although traditionally depicted as swashbuckling adventurers on the high seas, pirates played a crucial role on land. Far from a hindrance to trade, their enterprises contributed to commercial development and to the economic infrastructure of port towns."--

The British Navy in the Mediterranean / John D. Grainger
"This book presents a comprehensive overview of the activities of the British navy in the Mediterranean Sea from the earliest times until the twentieth century. It traces developments from Anglo-Saxon times, through the Crusades, and to the seventeenth century, when the Barbary corsairs became a major problem. It outlines Britain's involvement in the wars of the long eighteenth century, when Britain obtained bases at Gibraltar, Minorca and Malta and repeatedly defeated the French and Spanish navies. It examines the navy's activities during the First and Second World Wars, when the Mediterranean was again of crucial strategic significance and a major theatre of war, and goes on to consider Britain's withdrawal from the Mediterranean in the later twentieth century. Throughout, the book relates naval activity to patterns of trade, including the rise and decline of the Levant Company, and to wider international politics."--Provided by the publisher.
