Guardian of the East India Company : the life of Laurence Sulivan /George K. McGilvary.
A biography of Laurence Sulivan (1713-1786), for many years a director, Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the East India Company. Deeply involved in British and Indian affairs, Sulivan was a sponsor and protector of Warren Hastings and changed from being a friend to opponent of Chatham, Clive, Burke and Pitt the Younger when the Company was threatened with change. Born in Ireland, he travelled to Bombay in 1739 as a private merchant and following his marriage to Elizabeth Owen was hired by the East India Company to run its administration in Bombay. Returning to London, he was appointed to the Court of Directors of the Company in 1755. He was insistent the Company should remain an independent mercantile operation rather than an instrument of foreign policy. He was also elected Member of Parliament for firstly Taunton and then Ashburton and frequently spoke on East India Company issues. Bibliography included.

Storm of the sea : Indians and empires in the Atlantic's age of sail /Matthew R. Bahar.
Wabanaki communities across northeastern North America had been looking to the sea for generations before strangers from the east began arriving there in the sixteenth century. From earliest encounters to the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, scattered bands of Native hunter-gatherers came together to command fleets of sailing ships and engage in strategic diplomacy, thwarting English and French imperialism. Storm of the Sea narrates how by the Atlantic's Age of Sail, the People of the Dawn were mobilizing the ocean to achieve a dominion governed by its sovereign masters and enriched by its profitable and compliant tributaries--Provided by publisher.

The sailing frigate : a history in ship models /Robert Gardiner ; illustrated from the collections of the National Maritime Museum.
"Ship models offer more details than even the best plans and demonstrate exactly what the ships looked like in a way that even the finest marine painter could not achieve. This book is the first of a series which will take selections of the best models to tell the story of specific ship types - in this case, the evolution of the cruising ships under sail."--Provided by the publisher.

The emergence of Britain's global naval supremacy : the war of 1739-1748 /Richard Harding.
"The British involvement in the war of 1739-1748 has been generally neglected. Standing between the great victories of Marlborough in the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1713) and the even greater victories of the Seven Years War (1756-1763), it has been dismissed as inconclusive and incompetently managed. For the first time this book brings together the political and operational conduct of the war to explore its contribution to a critical development in British history during the eighteenth century - the emergence of Britain as the paramount global naval power. The war posed a unique set of problems for British politicians, statesmen and servicemen. They had to overcome domestic and diplomatic crises, culminating in the rebellion of 1745 and the threat of French invasion. Yet, far from being incompetent, these people handled the crises and learned a great deal about the conduct of global warfare. The changes they made and decisions they took prepared Britain for the decisive Anglo-French clash of arms in the Seven Years War. In this misunderstood war lie some of the key factors that made Britain the greatest naval power for the next one hundred and fifty years."--Provided by the publisher.

Ideologies of Western Naval Power, c. 1500-1815 / edited by J.D. Davies, Alan James and Gijs Rommelse.
"This ground-breaking book provides the first study of naval ideology, defined as the mass of cultural ideas and shared perspectives that, for early modern states and belief systems, justified the creation and use of naval forces. Sixteen scholars examine a wide range of themes over a wide time period and broad geographical range, embracing Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Sweden, Russia, Venice and the United States, along with the "extra-national" polities of piracy, neutrality, and international Calvinism. This volume provides important and often provocative new insights into both the growth of western naval power and important elements of political, cultural and religious history."--

Envisioning empire : the new British world from 1763 to 1773 /edited by Robert A. Olwell and James M. Vaughn
''Examining the pivotal period between the end of the Seven Years' War and the dawn of the American Revolution, Envisioning Empire reinterprets the development of the British Empire in the 18th century. With exceptional geographical scope, this book provides new ways of understanding the actors and events in many imperial arenas, including West Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and South Asia. While 1763 has long been seen as marking a turning point in British and British-colonial history, Envisioning Empire treats this epochal year, and the decade that followed, as constituting a discrete 'moment' in Imperial history that is significant in its own right. Exploring the programs and plans that sought to incorporate the vast new territories and millions of new subjects into the British state and imperial system, it demonstrates how the period between the end of the Seven Years' War and the beginning of the American Revolution was one of contested ideas about the future of British overseas expansion. By examining these competing imperial visions and designs from the perspective of Britain's new subjects as well as from that of British ministers, Envisioning Empire both illuminates and complicates the boundaries that have been drawn between the first and second British empires and reveals how the Empire was being conceived, discussed, and debated during an era of rapid transformation.''--Povided by the publisher.

Frames that speak : cartouches on early modern maps /by Chet Van Duzer.
"This lavishly illustrated book is the first systematic exploration of cartographic cartouches, the decorated frames that surround the title, or other text or imagery, on historic maps. It addresses the history of their development, the sources cartographers used in creating them, and the political, economic, historical, and philosophical messages their symbols convey. Cartouches are the most visually appealing parts of maps, and also spaces where the cartographer uses decoration to express his or her interests--so they are key to interpreting maps. The book discusses thirty-three cartouches in detail, which range from 1569 to 1821, and were chosen for the richness of their imagery. The book will open your eyes to a new way of looking at maps."--Provided by publisher.
