The Indian and Pacific correspondence of Sir Joseph Banks, 1768-
1820
/ edited by Neil Chambers.
"Following his participation in James Cook's circumnavigation in HMS Endeavour (1768-71), Joseph Banks developed an extensive global network of scientists and explorers. His correspondence shows how he developed effective working links with the British Admiralty and with the generation of naval officers who sailed after Cook. He was familiar with most natural philosophers in Britain and across Europe, many of whom consulted his unrivalled collections of Pacific natural history and ethnology, and who shared specimens and information with him regarding the region. Banks also advised the British government and commercial enterprise in the development of successive ventures to India, the Far East and the Pacific. His career demonstrates how a private individual could influence global exploration in the Georgian era.Banks's correspondence is one of the great primary sources for studying the Pacific region during this important period of exploration and colonial expansion. His Indian and Pacific correspondence has not previously been published in a fully edited thematic series."--from Amazon.

Making time fit : Astronomers, artisans and the state, 1770-
1820
/Eoin Edward Phillips
"This thesis focuses on the relationship between the clock- and watch-making communities in London and the institutions and personnel associated with the Admiralty, East India Company and the Board of Longitude, in the British effort to manage an effective solution for finding longitude at sea. The thesis identifies a strict cohort of Greenwich-trained personnel (mostly astronomers) and instruments (timekeepers, textbooks, tents) that emerged from the Royal Observatory from the 1770s onwards. It follows their production, testing and training in England, their experience and deployment around the world on a range of voyages, through to the impact made by their journeys back in the metropolis. By following the paths traced by these instruments, makers and users, the thesis proposes a new account of the relations between industrial transformation and imperial power in the period 1770-1820."--Provided by the author.

A biographical dictionary of British and Irish engravers, 1714-
1820
/ David Alexander.
"This biographical dictionary of engravers working on copper encompasses both those who produced fine art prints, and also those who engraved book illustrations for medical, technical and literary works, all of which played a more important part than is usually realised in spreading information in the age of Enlightenment. Some 4,000 biographical entries draw on much unpublished information, researched over four decades, notably records of apprenticeship, genealogy, insurance and bankruptcy as well as newspaper advertisements and contemporary accounts.0 This is the first reference work to cover all engravers working on copper in Britain and Ireland 1714-1820. Many biographical entries describe celebrated engravers producing "fine art" prints of paintings, which spread knowledge about living and dead artists. However, this book also builds up a more complex picture of the occupation of printmaking and includes engravers, many previously unresearched, who engraved ephemeral material, such as trade cards, bank notes, and satirical prints as well as the images that spread knowledge across literary, geographical, historical, topographical, medical and technical fields."--Provided by the publisher.

A cultural history of the Atlantic world, 1250-
1820
/ John K. Thornton.
"A Cultural History of the Atlantic World, 1250-1820 explores the idea that strong links exist in the histories of Africa, Europe and North and South America. John K. Thornton provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the Atlantic Basin before 1830 by describing political, social and cultural interactions between the continents' inhabitants. He traces the backgrounds of the populations on these three continental landmasses brought into contact by European navigation. Thornton then examines the political and social implications of the encounters, tracing the origins of a variety of Atlantic societies and showing how new ways of eating, drinking, speaking and worshipping developed in the newly created Atlantic World. This book uses close readings of original sources to produce new interpretations of its subject."--
