Victorian Wood Wharf and Greenwich Riverside,
1820
-2010 / by Ronald A. Richards and Derek J.
The area covered by the authors is situated along the river front at Grenwich, which runs from east to west from Greenwich Pier to the entrance of Deptford Creek. The book covers the period from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century; it talks about the people who lived and worked in this riverside area, the business and shops, which operated from here and the public houses that supplied a service to residents, visitors and staff.

Britain's maritime empire : Southern Africa, the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, 1763-
1820
/John
"A fascinating new study in which John McAleer explores the maritime gateway to Asia around the Cape of Good Hope and its critical role in the establishment, consolidation and maintenance of the British Empire in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Situated at the centre of a maritime chain that connected seas and continents, this gateway bridged the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, which, with its commercial links and strategic requirements, formed a global web that reflected the development of the British Empire in the period. The book examines how contemporaries perceived, understood and represented this area; the ways in which it worked as an alternative hub of empire, enabling the movement of people, goods, and ideas, as well as facilitating information and intelligence exchanges; and the networks of administration, security and control that helped to cement British imperial power"--

Global trade and the transformation of consumer cultures : the material world remade, c.1500-
1820
/Beverly
"The oceanic explorations of the 1490s led to countless material innovations worldwide and caused profound ruptures. Beverly Lemire explores the rise of key commodities across the globe, and charts how cosmopolitan consumption emerged as the most distinctive feature of material life after 1500 as people and things became ever more entangled. She shows how wider populations gained access to more new goods than ever before and, through industrious labour and smuggling, acquired goods that heightened comfort, redefined leisure and widened access to fashion. Consumption systems shaped by race and occupation also emerged. Lemire reveals how material cosmopolitanism flourished not simply in great port cities like Lima, Istanbul or Canton, but increasingly in rural settlements and coastal enclaves. The book uncovers the social, economic and cultural forces shaping consumer behaviour, as well as the ways in which consumer goods shaped and defined empires and communities."--Provided by the publisher.

Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope,
1820
-1831 : the founding of a colonial observatory : incorporating
This volume presents a comprehensive account of the origin, construction and use of the first major astronomical observatory in the southern hemisphere. Technical aspects, such as the instruments and their makers, the installation of the instruments and their initial problems, are described. In addition, the difficulties of founding a scientific institution in a remote colony are discussed in detail. The book includes a biography of the Cambridge-trained mathematician Fearon Fallows, the Observatory's first Director. The architecture, building methods and construction techniques are analyzed. There is also a wealth of detail on social aspects of life in Cape Town in the 1820s, including slavery and ecclesiastical matters. The book is unusual in the emphasis it gives to the human side of the story. It will be of interest to historians of science, astronomers, and historians, particularly of early nineteenth-century South Africa.
