The history of the Reid family : from Scotland to New South Wales /Francis David Reid ; with contribution by Sharon Colleen Steinberg.
"Arriving home late on a winter's night on 30 June 1858, Alexander Reid found his wife Smyth lying severely burnt and unconscious in the fire hearth with their baby son Alexander cradled in her arms. This is the story of Alexander Reid who emigrated from Scotland to New South Wales with his young bride Smyth Kydd in 1841. The narrative discusses his ancestry, journey to a new land and his life in Australia where Smyth met a tragic death and Alexander formed new relationships with Mary Ann McKenzie and Catherine Mary Rooney. The story evolves to relate the lives of Alexander's thirteen children, their partners and a diverse but limited selection of his grandchildren. Stories of descendants who served in the Boer War, the First World War and those that made the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War are told."--Provided by the publisher.

The burning of the Sarah Sands / Roger Willoughby and Alan Coles
"The fire aboard the troopship Sarah Sands was an epic story of gallantry that transfixed Victorian Britain. When the ship carrying men of the 54th Regiment to India in 1857 to help quell the Mutiny caught fire in the middle of the ocean with no means of summoning help, those aboard had to deal with the potential disaster themselves. Showing extraordinary courage and discipline, they put out the fire without loss of life and successfully nursed the damaged ship 800 miles to Mauritius. The authors not only tell the story of the fire and of the individuals involved - some heroic, some less so - in this well-illustrated book but have also compiled much medallic information. There is a roll of Indian Mutiny Medals to men aboard, a section on lifesaving awards for the incident, a detailed look at why no Victoria Cross was granted and a list of extant medals."--Provided by the publisher.

Race and power in British India : Anglo-Indians, class and identity in the nineteenth century /Valerie Anderson.
"By the nineteenth century the British had ruled India for over a hundred years, and had consolidated their power over the sub-continent. Until 1858, when Queen Victoria assumed sovereignty following the Indian Rebellion, the country was run by the East India Company - by this time a hybrid of state and commercial enterprises and eloquently and fiercely attacked as intrinsically immoral and dangerous by Edmund Burke in the late 1700s. Seeking to go beyond the statutes and ceremony, and show the reality of the interactions between rulers and ruled on a local level, this book looks at one of the most interesting phenomena of British India - the 'Eurasians'. The adventurers of the early years of Indian occupation arrived alone, and in taking 'native' mistresses and wives, created a race of administrators who were 'others' to both the native population and the British ruling class. These Anglo-Indian people existed in the zone between the colonizer and the colonized, and their history provides a wonderfully rich source for understanding Indian social history, race and colonial hegemony."--Provided by the publisher.

The Crinoline church, Eastney Barracks : the story of the Royal Marine Artillery church, its chaplains and its baptisms, 1866-1905 /Dennis Bill
Named after the shape of the building, the Crinoline Church was founded in Southsea in 1858 before moving to its St George's Road site in 1866. It remained there until 1905 when it was superseded by the permanent Royal Marine Artillery church dedicated to St Andrew, which was built in Henderson Road, Eastney. This book provides a history of the building, explores the link with the Crimean War and identifies the likely architects. Details of the memorials moved to St Andrew's from the original church are included and those named on memorials are listed along with brief biographies. A full list of baptisms performed at the church, transcribed from the original register held at The National Archives, is included and covers the period from 21 July 1866 to the end of 1905. The details provided in this are the baptism date, birth date and name of the child, and parents' names and rank when given. The author has also provided brief biographies of those baptised in the church and who were awarded gallantry medals (including the Meritorious Service Medal) or named on memorials. The author also provides short biographies of the Chaplains who performed baptisms in the church.

John Brett : Pre-Raphaelite landscape painter /Christiana Payne ; and Charles Brett.
"Drawing on a wealth of unpublished sketchbooks, journals and writings, this essential guide to John Brett (1831-1902) investigates the painter who was seen as the leader of the Pre-Raphaelite landscape school. As well as the familiar early works, including 'The Val d'Aosta' and 'The Stonebreaker', it provides rich information on his later, less-known coastal and marine paintings. Brett's turbulent friendship with John Ruskin is discussed, as are his relations with his beloved sister Rosa, and his partner Mary, with whom he had seven children. His fervent interest in astronomy, his love of the sea, and his lifelong pursuit of wealth and recognition are all examined in this reassessment, which concludes with a catalogue raisonne of his works, prepared by his descendent Charles Brett"--Provided by the publisher.

Sailing to freedom : maritime dimensions of the Underground Railroad /edited by Timothy D. Walker.
"In 1858, Mary Millburn successfully made her escape from Norfolk, Virginia, to Philadelphia aboard an express steamship. Millburn's maritime route to freedom was far from uncommon. By the mid-nineteenth century, an increasing number of enslaved people had fled northward along the Atlantic seaboard. While scholarship on the Underground Railroad has focused almost exclusively on overland escape routes from the antebellum South, this groundbreaking volume expands our understanding of how freedom was achieved by sea and what the journey looked like for many African Americans. With innovative scholarship and thorough research, Sailing to Freedom highlights little-known stories and describes the less-understood maritime side of the Underground Railroad, including the impact of African Americans' paid and unpaid waterfront labor. These ten essays reconsider and contextualize how escapes were managed along the East Coast, moving from the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland to safe harbor in northern cities such as Philadelphia, New York, New Bedford, and Boston."--

Shaw, Savill & Albion : a fleet history : incorporating the Albion Line, Shaw, Savil & Company, John Leslie, Walter Savill and his ships, Crusader Shipping Company, Aberdeen & Commonwealth Line /Henry C. Spong and Richard H. Osborne.
Providing a business history of each company, commencing with the foundation of Patrick Henderson & Co in 1834 and the development of their service to New Zealand in 1848 to carry settlers and materials. Trading as the Albion Line, the company dominated New Zealand trade until the foundation of Shaw Savill in 1858. While the formal establishment of the Albion Shipping Co took place in 1864, the company then merged with Shaw Savill in 1882 to become the Shaw, Savill & Albion Company Ltd. Having acquired the Aberdeen Line, the company was to eventually pass into the control of the Royal Mail Group and then Furness, Withy & Co before its demise as an entity in 1979. The fleet histories are organised by company and provide details of launch, ownership and service. The book is illustrated throughout with photographs.

Britain's oceanic empire : Atlantic and Indian Ocean Worlds, c. 1550-1850 /edited by H.V. Bowen, Elizabeth Mancke, and John G. Reid.
"This pioneering comparative study of British imperialism in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds draws on the perspectives of British newcomers overseas and their native hosts, metropolitan officials and corporate enterprises, migrants and settlers. Leading scholars examine the divergences and commonalities in the legal and economic regimes that allowed Britain to project imperium across the globe. They explore the nature of sovereignty and law, governance and regulation, diplomacy, military relations and commerce, shedding new light on the processes of expansion that influenced the making of empire. While acknowledging the distinctions and divergences in imperial endeavours in Asia and the Americas - not least in terms of the size of indigenous populations, technical and cultural differences, and approaches to indigenous polities - this book argues that these differences must be seen in the context of what Britons overseas shared, including constitutional principles, claims of sovereignty, disciplinary regimes and military attitudes"--

The Javanese travels of Purwalelana : a nobleman's account of his journeys across the island of Java, 1860-1875 /Translated, with an introduction and notes by Judith E. Bosnak and Frans X. Koot.
"Nobleman Radáen Mas Arya Candranegara V (1837-85), alias Purwalelana, journeyed across his homeland Java during the rapidly changing times of the nineteenth century. He travelled around 5000 kilometres by horse and carriage between 1860 and 1875. His eye-witness account The Travels of Purwalelana gives an inside view of Java, at the time part of the Dutch East Indies. Candranegara explains habits and traditions of both the Javanese and the Dutch, he describes the architecture of cities and temples and he marvels about the beautiful tropical landscape as well as about the latest technological inventions like steam trains, horse-drawn trams and gas lanterns. This Hakluyt publication, illustrated with contemporaneous images, presents the rare perspective of an Indonesian traveller living in colonial times. The author grew up as a member of a Javanese noble family in the hybrid world of the colonial upper class. He received a western-style education, but also learnt how to follow Javanese traditions and to be a good Muslim. In 1858 he was appointed to the high rank of Regent of Kudus by the colonial government. Candranegara wrote his book under the pseudonym Purwalelana, probably because he considered publishing to be an adventurous undertaking and possibly also because it gave him freedom to arrange the events in his own way. The Travels represent the first Javanese travelogue ever written and, as such, it broke with existing traditions. Candranegara used prose instead of poetry, wrote from a first person perspective rather than a third, and he told about present society rather than dwelling upon the common literary theme of kings in battle. The result is a lively story in which the traveller shares his experiences on the road. It provides its readers with a range of people and topics pivotal to developments in nineteenth century Java, a treasure trove for historians and cultural anthropologists alike"--
