From coastal sail to global shipping, 1909-
2009
: the history of the Steamship Mutual Underwriting Association
"Steamship Mutual Underwriting Association was established in 1909 and was originally part of the Sailing Ship Mutual Association which originated in the Southwest of England. In its early years it insured many of the well known sailing ships; the Nurse Brothers ships from Gloucester, the Ashburner fleet from Barrow and the Stephens fleet from Fowey. These were the famous ships in the foreign trade in their time but by 1909 they were confined to the coastal trade and the days of sail were numbered. By the inter war years the Club was insuring barges on the Thames and Medway rivers. Today Steamship Mutual is one of the top international Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Clubs and insures containerships, cruise ships, tankers and many other vessels owned across the world. By looking at the people and the events that influenced its history, this book tells the story of how this small British club, insuring just a few hundred vessels, became a successful global organisation."--Dust jacket.

Hidden Treasures from the Mary Rose : 7 April - 7 August
2009
at Whitgift School.
A major exhibition of 200 artefacts, many of which have never before been on public display. Includes jewellery, money, domestic utensils, medical equipment, navigational apparatus and weaponry and gives a taste of the daily life of officers and sailors on board. For the first time ever, visitors will be able to see the faces of two crew members, which have been reconstructed using forensic science. The contrasting preservative or corrosive effects of seawater on a range of materials are displayed at the exhibition from Henry VIII's 16th century warship, naval, military, domestic, musical and medical artefacts are included. Materials that look as though they were shaped and carved only yesterday are mostly of wood - ash, beech, box, rosewood, willow and yew. Also in good condition are artefacts made from ceramics, wax, bone, some fabrics and hemp. The fate of metals is more varied, the least reactive surviving in perfect condition while others are corroded.

The history of the Siemens Brothers Engineering Society supplement :
2009
-2013 the final five years /
"The archive material detailed in this history has been supplied by members of the Society over recent years and is now donated to the Greenwich Heritage Centre for safe keeping and for the benefit of future generations and researchers. The October 2008 meeting of the Society represented the 40th Anniversary of the closure of the Woolwich Works in 1968. This major milestone provided the spur to produce 'The History of the Society 1897-2008' published in October 2009. The Society continued to meet until October 2013, the 45th Anniversary of the closure of the Woolwich Works in 1968. This final meeting has to the production of this Supplement - the final five years of the Society's history."

Tugs and offshore supply vessels
2009
/10 (UK and Ireland) / by James Dodds and Bernard McCall.
"Lists tugs and offshore supply and standby vessels owned or operated by companies in the UK, Ireland and Gibraltar. This is the third edition of the valuable handbook which lists tugs and offshore supply vessels owned or managed from offices in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar. This edition includes more vessels than the previous one, also more photographs. The first section of the book covers offshore supply and support ships; the second section covers the tugs. The fleets are arranged alphabetically by owning company. Contact details are given for the owners. Each vessel is listed along with its year of build, gross tonnage, length, beam, maximum draught, engine horsepower and bollard pull where these details are available and relevant. The previous names of each vessel are also given. The inclusion of an index of all vessel names adds to the book's value as a work of reference."--Provided by the publisher.
