The Airfix book of scale modelling / Jonathan Mock.
"The Airfix Book of Scale Modelling is the essential guide to making greatlooking model kits and getting the most out of this fascinating and rewarding hobby, explaining how to build scale models to suit all levels of modelling skill. With full colour photography throughout, the book covers the history of modelling and of the Airfix company, and shows how injection moulded kits are made, before going on to describe and review the major modelling scales, as well as outlining the range of paints, tools and accessories that are available. Chapters include guides to choosing a kit, tools for the job, painting, decals, conversions, figure-painting, dioramas and more. Common problems and how to solve them are addressed, and the book also features a series of step-by-step construction projects, including expert builds of the F86 Sabre jet, the Aston Martin DBR9, a Panzer IV tank, the Airfix yeoman figure (soon to be reissued in time for the London 2012 Olympics), a Trafalgar class submarine and a scenic diorama."--Back cover.

Detailed captions providing information about the tug and the location accompany each photograph. The locations have been selected to illustrate the wide variety of tugs that have been seen in northern Europe over the last forty years and are arranged in a general geographical sequence from Russia via the Baltic States, Poland and Scandinavia to Germany. Fishing around Morecambe Bay / Mike Smylie.
"Maritime historian Mike Smylie takes the reader on a wonderfully comprehensive journey through the history of fishing in and around Morecambe Bay in this first book to be devoted to fishing in the locale. It spans a wide area covering places such as Barrow, Ulverston, Grange-over-Sands, Morecambe, Glasson and Fleetwood. Focusing on an area that was brought to national attention after the tragic deaths of twenty-one cockle pickers there in 2004, it covers a wide variety of topics - from salmon and shrimps to Lancashire nobbies and fishing on horseback - ensuring there is something of interest to everyone. Featuring over 170 photographs, many of which have been locally sourced, this book is packed full of interesting facts, such as the use of horses to drag trawl-nets through shallow waters - a practice unique to the British coast. Recounting the history of the fisheries by boat, horse and hand, Fishing around Morecambe Bay is sure to appeal to both fishing industry enthusiasts and those with an interest in the history of the local area."--Provided by the publisher.

The Edwardian superliners : a trio of trios /J. Kent Layton.
"Three sets of ocean liners, each destined to be of three vessels, dominated the Atlantic in the Edwardian era. The race to build the biggest and the best began with Mauretania and Lusitania in 1906, followed by the White Star Line's Olympic and Titanic in 1911-12. Each of these pairs was to see a larger sister, developed as a result of changes needed or desired as a result of operating the two earlier vessels, with Cunard's being Aquitania and White Star's, the ill-fated Britannic. Germany's answer to these British behemoths was the Albert-Ballin designed trio of Imperator, Vaterland and Bismarck. Through misfortune or war, two of these vessels would sink but the others led useful lives, with Aquitania surviving two world wars before being scrapped. Designed to be the absolute engineering achievements of their time, these nine vessels dominated the Atlantic."--Publisher.

Ravilious in pictures : the war paintings /James Russell.
"This book celebrates and commemorates the wartime career of Eric Ravilious who died on active service in Iceland at the age of thirty-nine. As an Official War Artist, Ravilious visited ports, naval bases and airfields around Britain, witnessed the Allied invasion and retreat from Norway and produced watercolours of subjects ranging from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in action to the interior of a mobile pigeon loft. Ravilious in Pictures: The War Paintings, features twenty-two of these fascinating images, each accompanied by a short essay in which author James Russell explores the historical context of the work. Drawing on the artist's correspondence and other contemporary sources, these essays offer an unusual, intriguing vision of life during the early years of the war."--

James Fitzjames : the mystery man of the Franklin Expedition /William Battersby.
A biography of James Fitzjames, captain of HMS Erebus and third in command on Franklin's 1845 expedition to find the North West passage. The author established that Fitzjames was the illegitimate son of a diplomat, Sir James Gambier, and was brought up by the Reverend Robert Conningham. Fitzjames joined the Royal Navy in 1825, served on the Euphrates expedition from 1834-37, fought in the Egyptian-Ottoman War (1839-40) as a gunnery lieutenant and then in the First Opium War before joining the Franklin expedition on which he died in 1848. The author draws on Fitzjames's personal letters and journals as well as official naval records.

Atlas of the transatlantic slave trade / David Eltis and David Richardson ; foreword by David Brion Davis ; afterword by David W. Blight.
Between 1501 and 1867, the transatlantic slave trade claimed an estimated 12.5 million Africans and involved almost every country with an Atlantic coastline. In this extraordinary book, two leading historians have created the first comprehensive, up-to-date atlas on this 350-year history of kidnapping and coercion. It features nearly 200 maps, especially created for the volume, that explore every detail of the African slave traffic to the New World.-publisher description.

Sailing past the point / Bernard McCall
"Without doubt Battery Point in Portishead is one of the best locations in the UK to watch ships as they pass by. Shipping enthusiasts will stake the claims of other viewing points but it is difficult to surpass the variety of ships seen at Battery Point ? and their closeness to the observer on land. To illustrate this variety, we published Passing the Point in 2005 and Still Passing the Point in 2010. Shipping does not exist on a limb; like everything else it is subject to change and variation. The changes in the Bristol Channel shipping scene over the last twelve years have been considerable. The photographs have been arranged in small groups to illustrate the various types of ships which pass Battery Point. There are now various websites which purport to feature the passing shipping. In fact most of these offer little information other than basic (and sometimes incorrect) details cribbed from other websites. This book will provide interesting details about the ships, their builders, their cargoes, and, where appropriate, their significance within the wider maritime world."--Provided by the publisher.
