Armstrong's river empire : Tyne shipyards that supplied the world, 1852-1948 /Dick Keys and Ken Smith.
"The exciting story of Newcastle's Elswick and Low Walker shipyards, the icebreakers, train ferries, and warships that steamed from the Tyne to all parts of the world from the 1850s until after World War Two. This new book examines the achievements of Lord W.G. Armstrong and of Charles Mitchell, ingenious and entrpreneurial shipbuilders and engineers who established the Tyne's reputation for soundly built ships. With many archive photographs, from the 1860s to the 1940s, this book comprises a complete history of the two shipyards. This new book celebrates the bicentenary of Lord Armstrong's birth in 1810. Armstrong's River Empire includes a 12 page colour section illustrating the exotic cards produced to celebrate the launches of many of these ships. They have rarely been reproduced before."--Provided by the publisher

Pirates of Barbary / by Adrian Tinniswood.
From the coast of Southern Europe to Morocco and the Ottoman states of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli, Christian and Muslim seafarers met in bustling ports to swap religions, to battle and to trade goods and sales - raiding as far as Ireland and Iceland in search of their human currency. Studying the origins of these men, their culture and practices, Adrian Tinniswood expertly recreates the twilight world of the corsairs and uncovers a truly remarkable clash of civilisations. Drawing on a wealth of material, from furious royal proclamations to the private letters of pirates and their victims, as well as recent Islamic accounts, Pirates of Barbary provides a new perspectives of the corsairs and a fascinating insight into what it meant to sacrifice all you have for a life so violent, so uncertain and so alien that it sets you apart from the rest of mankind.

Pathfinders : the golden age of Arabic science /Jim Al-Khalili.
"In Pathfinders: The Golden Age of Arabic Science, Jim al-Khalili celebrates the forgotten pioneers who helped shape our understanding of the world. For over 700 years the international language of science was Arabic. Surveying the golden age of Arabic science, Jim Al-Khalili reintroduces such figures as the Iraqi physicist Ibn al-Haytham, who practised the modern scientific method over half a century before Bacon; al-Khwarizmi, the greatest mathematician of the medieval world; and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, a Persian polymath to rival Leonardo da Vinci."--Provided by the publisher.

Crescent shipping / K.S. Garrett.
Chronicles the story of Crescent Shipping, which began as a coastal transport company in 1849. By 1900 a large number of sailing barges were operated by the company. In the years leading to the Second World War many sailing craft were fitted with motors and some seagoing cargo ships were added to the fleet. Post-1945, larger seagoing ships were acquired and the company engaged in cable-laying, bulk powders and the dumping of nuclear waste. The book charts the evolution of the company up until 2008, by which time Crescent had been subsumed into a large international group. Contains numerous photographs, and fleet lists for motor ships, motor barges, tugs, Bowker and King, Offshore Marine, Crescent Ship Management and others.

Perverts by official order : the campaign against homosexuals by the United States Navy /Lawrence R. Murphy.
"This candid book documents for the first time the U.S. Navy's use of entrapment in pursuit of homosexuals in and around Newport, Rhode Island, during the early twentieth century. This most extensive systematic persecution of gays in American history occurred with the approval of Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels and Assistant Secretary Franklin Roosevelt, as dozens of sailors were ordered to identify and even seduce gay men in order to report their names to the authorities. Noted historian Lawrence Murphy reveals the details of this sordid campaign that ultimately generated a national scandal and first raised issues of gay rights and governmental persecution of homosexuals."--Provided by the publisher.

Queen Victoria : a photographic journey /Chris Frame and Rachelle Cross.
"Built by Fincantieri and introduced into service in late 2007, Queen Victoria's reign is still quite young. She has been welcomed with open arms by the cruising public and is a floating celebrity with royal engagements, tandem Atlantic crossings and Gala World Cruises. The first in a new breed of Cunard ships, her design - based on the Vista Class hull of Carnival Corporation - is strengthened and enhanced to give her the ability to cross the North Atlantic Ocean. This hybrid represents a new era for the 170-year-old Cunard Line, introducing one of the most luxurious ships to carry the Golden Lion. Queen Victoria: A Photographic Journey takes the reader on the journey of a lifetime through the public rooms of this stately ship. From her exquisite Grand Lobby to her Royal Court Theatre, each room is described in light narrative with complementing photographs, allowing the reader to enjoy an on-board experience from the comfort of their living room! Written by two passionate ocean liner and cruise fans, this book is beautifully illustrated with over 200 colour photographs, creating a lovely lasting memento of Cunard's Queen Victoria."--Provided by the publisher.

Gale force 10 : the life and legacy of Admiral Beaufort
A biography of Francis Beaufort (1774-1857). Beginning his career with the East India Company, Beaufort joined the Royal Navy in 1790 and rose through the ranks, retiring with the rank of Rear Admiral in 1846 at the age of seventy-two. In 1805, Beaufort devised the first objective measure of wind strength, now known as the Beaufort Scale, officially adopted by the Royal Navy on voyages during the 1830s. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1829, was appointed the British Admiralty Hydrographer of the Royal Navy, serving in that position for twenty-six years, and helped to found the Royal Geographical Society. He trained Robert Fitzroy, commander of the Beagle, and in response to Fitzroy's request for a "well-educated and scientific gentleman", Beaufort's enquiries led to Charles Darwin joining the Beagle for her second voyage. Beaufort promoted the publication of reliable tide tables, expanded the British Admiralty Chart Series to some 2000 charts, directed some of the major naval explorations of the time, and played a leading role in the search for the explorer Sir John Franklin. He was knighted in 1848.

Dhow culture of the Indian Ocean : cosmopolitanism, commerce, and Islam /Abdul Sheriff.
The wooden dhow, with its characteristic lateen sail, is an appropriate icon for the early trading world of the Indian Ocean. It was based on free trade unhindered by monopolies or superpower domination and pre-dated 'globalisation' by thousands of years. It carried a motley crew of sailors, traders and passengers, and many commodities, but the dhow was not merely an inanimate transporter of goods and people, but an animated means of social interaction. The dhow was at the mercy of the seasonal monsoons, but mercifully this very fact multiplied opportunities for social interaction between the sailors and traders with their hosts around the rim of the Indian Ocean, giving birth to cosmopolitan populations and cultures. The dhow was thus a vehicle for a genuine dialog between civilizations. This sweeping and vividly written popular history of the dhow cultures contains dozens of color illustrations and many maps and is set to become the benchmark history of the early Indian Ocean.

To western Scottish waters : by rail and steamer to the Isles /Robert N. Forsythe.
"A pictorial tour through the decades and a peek into how both people and goods have travelled to the Isles over the years. Illustrated with old photographs, advertising leaflets and timetables, as well as more recent photographs by the author, the ever-changing modes of travel are portrayed here. Moving from the early days of tourist traffic to the Highlands and Islands, To Western Scottish Waters takes us through the golden years of David MacBrayne and the Caledonian and North British Railways through to the appearance of Caledonian MacBrayne in the early 1970s. This pictorial survey uses the colourful and inventive publicity material of the principal companies involved in West Highland tourist traffic, such as the framed Puffers and the second car ferries used to keep inter-island traffic flowing. Travel to the Western Highlands was once dependent totally on rail or sea travel and was often dirty and slow - it was common to be greeted by a flock of sheep on one of MacBrayne's steamers - and To Western Scottish Waters is an evocative trip down memory lane for those who remember the Royal Route and steamers such as the Columba and Grenadier or for those who travelled on the Kyle-Kyleakin ferry before the Skye bridge."Provided by the publisher.

Sailing seven seas : a history of the Canadian Pacific Line /Peter Pigott.
Using first-hand accounts of former captains, shore staff, pursers and stewardesses, the author writes about the experiences on board Canadian Pacific ships from 1883 until 2005. Attempting to set the narrative against the general background of Anglo-Canadian history, the book tracks the arrival of the first ships, known as Empresses, through to the use of the entire fleet as Allied troop carriers during both world wars and 2005 when what was left of the maritime operation was sold off. Black and white and coloured photographs are included alongside advertisements for travel on the Canadian Pacific Line.

Clyde coast piers / Alistair Deayton.
''Often a lifeline for remote waterside communities, the Scottish pier has been a functional rather than a pleasure pier. Served by paddle steamers, puffers and small coasters, the piers served a vital function for their communities. Often with stunning mountain backdrops, many settlements clustered around the piers, which provided a means of communication with the world at large. Some piers, like Rothesay's, could accommodate a number of pleasure steamers at once, while others, such as at Tighnabruaich, were built with functionality in mind, providing for the needs of the inhabitants. Alistair Deayton brings together a superb selection of images of the Clyde Coast piers from the late nineteenth-century to the present day, telling their history and showing just some of the variety of vessels that called there. From Macbrayne's steamers to the working vessels of McCallum, Orme and the puffers of Glenlight, a vast array of ships are shown.''--Provided by the publisher.

Flower class corvettes / John Lambert & Les Brown.
"The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references -- books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. This volume includes all the features of the regular series but the extent has been doubled to include far more detailed drawings of a class of ship that was built in huge numbers and in many variations. Mainstay of the Atlantic battle against the U-boats, Flower class corvettes were used by the British, Canadian, French and US Navies."--Provided by the publisher.
