London's docklands : an illustrated history /Geoff Marshall.
"London's Docklands is one of the most exciting areas of the capital. Once the docks teemed with men and ships from all over the world, now all is transformed and a new and vibrant area has grown up with commerce, stylish housing, fashionable shops and restaurants. In this fascinating book, the author takes the reader on a journey. He outlines the historical development of the area from Roman beginnings and the Elizabethan Legal Quays to the construction of the largest system of docks in the world. Life in the docks is described, including their often fraught industrial relations, their eventual demise and the re-birth of Docklands with the development of Canary Wharf. Dockland's historic riverside pubs are described, and its former industries, pioneering voyages and fine churches."--Provided by the publisher.

Black flag of the north : Bartholomew Roberts, king of the Atlantic pirates /Victor Suthren.
"He was tall, dark, and handsome, he wore fine velvets and lace, and in four tumultuous years he tore the guts out of the Atlantic. Bartholomew Roberts took over 400 ships and rarely lost a fight at sea in his short, spectacular reign. He set the Atlantic aflame from the Grand Banks to Brazil, and by blood and fire won his reputation as the fearless and feared King of the Pirates. Cast in a gripping narrative that combines historical accuracy with a novelist's flowing prose, Black Flag of the North tells the story of Roberts's dramatic life, from his boyhood in rural South Wales through his days at sea during the slave trade, culminating in the stunning events in Canada that opened his four-year piratical career, to his fiery end beneath British guns off the coast of West Africa."--

British Ironclads 1860-75 : HMS Warrior and the Royal Navy's 'Black Battlefleet' /Angus Konstam.
"In November 1859, the French warship La Gloire was launched. She was the world's first seagoing ironclad - a warship built from wood, but whose hull was clad in a protective layer of iron plate. Britain, not to be outdone, launched her own ironclad the following year - HMS Warrior - which, when she entered service, became the most powerful warship in the world. Just like the Dreadnought half a century later, this ship changed the nature of naval warfare forever, and sparked a frantic arms race. The elegant but powerful Warrior embodied the technological advances of the early Victorian era, and the spirit of this new age of steam, iron and firepower. Fully illustrated with detailed cutaway artwork, this book covers the British ironclad from its inception and emergence in 1860, to 1875, a watershed year, which saw the building of a new generation of recognisably modern turreted battleships."--Provided by the publisher.

Seaforth world naval review 2019 / edited by Conrad Waters.
"Now celebrating its tenth edition, World Naval Review provides an affordable but yet authoritative summary of global naval developments over the past 12 months. Regional surveys of fleet evolution and procurement by editor Conrad Waters are supplemented by in-depth articles from a range of subject experts focusing on significant new warships, technological advances and specific navies. Features in this edition include extended reviews of the new aircraft carriers USS Gerald R. Ford and HMS Queen Elizabeth, the largest ships ever to serve in their respective fleets. Technological subjects include assessments of naval communications by Norman Friedman and autonomous systems by Richard Scott, whilst David Hobbs' usual review of naval aviation is expanded to include a broader analysis of key trends over the last decade. Meanwhile, reviews of specific fleets focus on the navies of Canada, Peru and Singapore, all medium-sized naval powers at critical - if very different - phases of their development. Firmly established as providing the only annual naval overview of its type, World Naval Review is essential reading for anyone - whether enthusiast or professional - interested in contemporary maritime affairs."--Provided by the publisher

The Cutty Sark : pocket manual /Arron Hewett, Louise Macfarlane
"Constructed on the Clyde in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, Cutty Sark was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest. Cutty Sark spent just a few years on the tea routes before the opening of the Suez Canal and the increasing use of steamships made clippers unprofitable on shorter routes. It was turned to the trade in wool from Australia, where for ten years she held the record time for a journey to Britain. After finishing her time in service as cargo ship, and then a training and cadet ship, it was transferred to permanent dry dock at Greenwich, London, for public display. This handy and illuminating pocket manual collates original documents to tell the fascinating story of how the legendary Cutty Sark was commissioned, her design and building, life on board and her notable journeys."--Provided by the publisher.

The spectral Arctic : a history of ghosts and dreams in polar exploration /Shane McCorrisine.
"Visitors to the Arctic enter places that have been traditionally imagined as otherworldly. This strangeness fascinated audiences in nineteenth-century Britain when the idea of the heroic explorer voyaging through unmapped zones reached its zenith. The Spectral Arctic re-thinks our understanding of Arctic exploration by paying attention to the importance of dreams and ghosts in the quest for the Northwest Passage. The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly-lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin's lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these spectral stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the far North in the past. This revisionist historical account allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the location of Franklin's ships."--Provided by the publisher.

Art and war in the Pacific world : making, breaking, and taking from Anson's voyage to the Philippine-American War /J.M. Mancini.
"The Pacific world has long been recognized as a hub for the global trade in art objects, but the history of art and architecture has seldom reckoned with another profound aspect of the region's history: its exposure to global conflict during the British and US imperial incursions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Art and War in the Pacific World provides a new view of the Pacific world and of global artistic interaction by exploring how the making, alteration, looting, and destruction of images, objects, buildings, and landscapes intersected with the exercise of force. Focusing on the period from Commodore George Anson's voyage to the Philippine-American War, J. M. Mancini's exceptional study deftly weaves together disparate strands of history to create a novel paradigm for cultural analysis."--Provided by publisher.

An illustrated history of the port of Hull and its railways / by Mike G Fell OBE
"This is the third Irwell Press book written by Mike G. Fell OBE concerning ports and their railways. The previous two have covered King's Lynn and Goole. Mike, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, was in charge of the Port of Hull for sixteen years from 1987 until 2003 and previously was a stevedoring operations manager at the port for three years from 1977 to 1979. The book describes and graphically illustrates the history of the port and its railways from the time of the opening of Queen's Dock in 1778 until the present day. One of the book's chief aims is to dispel the widespread notion that Hull was only a fishing port. The fishing industry was once very important to the City of Hull but it actually formed only a small part of the port's overall commercial activities. Hull's success was founded on its ability to offer excellent facilities to increasingly larger ships which traded worldwide with a great variety of cargoes and the export of coal from the South Yorkshire coalfield, all of which arrived by train."--Provided by the publisher.

Coal, steam and ships : engineering, enterprise and empire on the nineteenth-century seas /Crosbie Smith.
"Crosbie Smith explores the trials and tribulations of first-generation Victorian mail steamship lines, their passengers, proprietors and the public. Eyewitness accounts show in rich detail how these enterprises engineered their ships, constructed empire-wide systems of steam navigation and won or lost public confidence in the process. Controlling recalcitrant elements within and around steamship systems, however, presented constant challenges to company managers as they attempted to build trust and confidence. Managers thus wrestled to control shipbuilding and marine engine-making, coal consumption, quality and supply, shipboard discipline, religious readings, relations with the Admiralty and government, anxious proprietors, and the media - especially following a disaster or accident. Emphasizing interconnections between maritime history, the history of engineering and Victorian thought, Smith's innovative history of early ocean steamships reveals the fraught uncertainties of Victorian life on the seas."--Provided by the publisher.

Mapping society : the spatial dimensions of social cartography /Laura Vaughan.
"From a rare map of yellow fever in eighteenth-century New York, to Charles Booth's famous maps of poverty in nineteenth-century London, an Italian racial zoning map of early twentieth century Asmara, to a map of wealth disparities in the banlieues of twenty-first-century Paris, Mapping Society traces the evolution of social cartography over the past two centuries. In this richly illustrated book, Laura Vaughan examines maps of ethnic or religious difference, poverty, and health inequalities, demonstrating how they not only serve as historical records of social enquiry, but also constitute inscriptions of social patterns that have been etched deeply on the surface of cities. The book covers themes such as the use of visual rhetoric to change public opinion, the evolution of sociology as an academic practice, changing attitudes to physical disorder, and the complexity of segregation as an urban phenomenon. While the focus is on historical maps, the narrative carries the discussion of the spatial dimensions of social cartography forward to the present day, showing how disciplines such as public health, crime science, and urban planning chart spatial data in their current practice. Containing examples of space syntax analysis alongside historical maps and photographs, this volume will appeal to all those interested in the long-term forces that shape how people live in cities."--Provided by the publisher.

Sentinels of the sea: a miscellany of lighthouses past/R. G. Grant
"Lighthouses have always unsettled and attracted in equal measure, highlighting the triumphs and failures in humanity's battle with the forces of nature. Taking as its heroes the lighthouses themselves, Sentinels of the Sea describes the engineering genius that allowed their construction on even the smallest of rock outcrops and the innovations that made the lights so powerful and reliable. Intricate, elegant architectural plans and elevations, and evocative period drawings and photographs showcase the innovative designs and technologies behind fifty historic lighthouses built around the world from the 17th to the 20th century. R.G. Grant's engaging and authoritative text chronicles the incredible feats of engineering and endurance that brought these iconic, isolated towers into being, the advances in lens technology that made the lights so effective, and the everyday routines of the lighthouse keepers and the heroic rescues that some performed. Packed with extraordinary stories of human endeavour, desperate shipwrecks, builders defying the elements and heroic sea rescues, the book also reveals the isolation and vulnerability of the dedicated lighthouse keepers."--Provided by the publisher.

Nightraiders : U.S. Navy, Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, and Royal Netherlands Navy mine forces battling the Japanese in the pacific in World War II.
''As war with Japan was imminent, the British laid minefields off Hong Kong and Singapore; the Dutch in the Netherlands East Indies; and the Australians off New Zealand and Australia, in an attempt to prevent enemy invasion. Ships hastily converted to this task were referred to as ''night raiders.'' Duty aboard a ''floating ammunition dump'' was hazardous enough; missions carried out under the cloak of darkness increased the odds of survival in enemy waters. As MacArthur, Halsey, and Spruance?s forces advanced toward Japan, minesweepers worked with ''night raiders''?clearing waters off landing beaches, while minelayers strove to deny the enemy freedom of the sea. Australian seaplanes (Black Cats) flew long, perilous night-missions to mine Japanese harbors, and British submarines and planes joined in the attack on shipping. Late in the war, USAAF bombers ringed the Japanese home islands with thousands of mines. When hostilities ended, war-weary ''sweep sailors'' remained in Asian waters?ridding the sea of ''shipkillers.'' The little-known efforts of these valiant men are illuminated in this rare look into history. One hundred and forty-four photographs, maps, and diagrams; appendices; and an index to full-names, places and subjects add value to this work.--Provide by the publisher.

The burning of the Sarah Sands / Roger Willoughby and Alan Coles
"The fire aboard the troopship Sarah Sands was an epic story of gallantry that transfixed Victorian Britain. When the ship carrying men of the 54th Regiment to India in 1857 to help quell the Mutiny caught fire in the middle of the ocean with no means of summoning help, those aboard had to deal with the potential disaster themselves. Showing extraordinary courage and discipline, they put out the fire without loss of life and successfully nursed the damaged ship 800 miles to Mauritius. The authors not only tell the story of the fire and of the individuals involved - some heroic, some less so - in this well-illustrated book but have also compiled much medallic information. There is a roll of Indian Mutiny Medals to men aboard, a section on lifesaving awards for the incident, a detailed look at why no Victoria Cross was granted and a list of extant medals."--Provided by the publisher.

Britain's working coast in Victorian and Edwardian times / John Hannavy.
"The coastline of Victorian and Edwardian Britain provided beauty, isolation, entertainment, and the venue for most people's holidays. But it was also a thriving centre of industry - shipbuilding and fishing, plus the numerous trades associated with dockyards, coastal transport and the leisure industry. This companion to the English Seaside in Victorian and Edwardian Times travels around Britain's coast - clockwise from London - looking at the industries that could be found in many of the cities and towns en route. Illustrated with an amazing collection of coloured postcards and other early photographs, the working coast of Britain is brought to life in all its bustling detail. From the naval dockyards of Chatham to the fishermen of Wick, the book opens a window onto a British coast which is now largely lost."--Back cover

Fishing for souls : the development and impact of British fishermen's missions /Stephen Friend.
"Fishing for Souls' explores the origins and development of fishermen's missions in Britain, focussing particularly on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Stephen Friend establishes "an historical outline of the development of the churches' work among British fishing communities and explores why a mission specifically concerned with fishermen was not initiated until the industry entered a period of economic decline during the early 1880s. The factors relating to the development of British fishermen's missions are complex, involving not only social and technological changes inside and outside the fishing industry, but also changing theological perceptions that had a significant impact on attitudes to social conditions". With its honesty and objectivity, especially concerning developments that were difficult and painful for the fishermen's mission societies at the time, 'Fishing for Souls' reveals the magnificent work that the various societies did, and in some cases continue to do."--Provided by the publisher
