Boatowner's practical and technical cruising manual
"This book is the most comprehensive, helpful and up to date guide ever written on selecting, equipping and sailing a cruising yacht. Indispensable for prospective boat buyers and cruisers, whether coastal or world-girdling, it covers all the technical and practical aspects of cruising yachts and systems in one unique book. Nigel Calder, one of the most respected nautical how-to authors with extensive cruising experience and a rare ability to reduce complexities to simple explanations, explains not only how to select and equip a yacht for coastal or offshore cruising, but also how to sail and navigate it, addressing the concerns of beginners and experienced owners alike. This is the book the cruising world has welcomed as a must have reference."--Provided by the publisher.

Coast Lines : fleet list and history /Ian Collard.
"Formed on Merseyside in 1913, Coast Lines grew from a small fleet of sixteen coastal ships operating in the Irish Sea to the world's largest coastal fleet. At the time, over 4 million tons of shipping sailed from the Mersey on coastal voyages. At its height, the company included Powell, Bacon & Hough Lines, British Channel Islands Shipping, Queenship Navigation, the Belfast Steamship Company, Burns & Laird Lines, the British & Irish Steam Packet, the North of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Shipping Company, Tyne Tees Shipping and the Zillah Shipping Company. Pioneering the coordination of road transport with coastal shipping from the 1950s onwards, in 1971 Coast Lines was eventually taken over by P&O, by which time the fleet had declined from 110 passenger and cargo vessels in 1955 to only twenty-five. In this book, Ian Collard both examines the fascinating history of this famous Liverpool shipping company and provides a comprehensive fleet list."--Provided by the publisher.

The human shore : seacoasts in history /John R. Gillis.
"In The Human Shore, a magisterial account of 100,000 years of seaside civilization, John R. Gillis recovers the coastal experience from its origins among the people who dwelled along the African shore to the bustle and glitz of today's megacities and beach resorts. He takes readers from discussion of the possible coastal location of the Garden of Eden to the ancient communities that have existed along beaches, bays, and bayous since the beginning of human society to the crucial role played by coasts during the age of discovery and empire. An account of the mass movement of whole populations to the coasts in the last half-century brings the story of coastal life into the present."--Provided by publisher.

Coasters : an illustrated history /Roy Fenton.
"John Masefield's 'dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack, butting through the Channel in the mad March days' has become a ship type of universal appeal, both for its simple, functional beauty and its faithful toil before the advent of universal road haulage. In this new book a collection of more than 300 photographs has been drawn together to tell the story of the development of the steam and diesel coasters, which originated mainly in the UK and the Netherlands. The term 'coaster' embraces a huge range of types including the steam colliers, the puffers, packets, steam flats and lighters mainly designed for inland seas, then the ubiquitous steam coaster itself, built in large numbers for use around British shores but also further afield in every corner of the world. Coastal tankers and other specialist types like chemical and cement carriers also evolved. As well as the details of the ships themselves, the book covers cargo handling and stowing, machinery, the coastal trades, the owners and builders and, not least, the crews and their jobs and their lives at sea. A hugely evocative and illuminating book to delight and inform ship enthusiasts everywhere."--Provided by the publisher

Women who stay : seafaring and subjectification in an Ilocos town /Roderick G Galam
"Women Who Stay addresses the question of how women married to seafarers are shaped by migration and how they in turn shape migration. Looking at subjectivity as social becoming, it examines how Ilokano, Philippine, and global historical and economic processes have shaped the women's lives and experiences. While offering a culturally nuanced account of how women in an Ilocos town have navigated the spaces and times of their lives, the book also engages with broader social issues and concepts making it of interest to scholars and students of gender, migration, family, subjectivity, and the global maritime industry."--Provided by the publisher.

Maritime Norfolk : Part one /Robert Malster.
"Maritime Norfolk Part One is the first part of a lifetime's enthusiam and research for the foremost of East Anglia's writers on maritime topics. Robert Malster ventured to sea on a shrimper in the Wash, on a drifter out of Yarmouth, talked with longshore fishermen and beachmen, pored over local newspapers and documents in the Record Office and brings his decades of reasearch together in the 272 pages of this volume. This volume is the first of two parts; it deals with the Norfolk coast from Wisbech and Kings Lynn to Caister."--Provided by the publisher

Vaila Mae : the making of the sixareen
"For centuries sixareens sailed the waters of Shetland. Descended from imported Norwegian boats, Shetlanders built their own sixareens 200 years ago. These boats were vital to island life, fishing in distant waters and carrying a cargo around the coast. This film follows the step-by-step construction of the first new sixareen to be built in Lerwick for over a century, as well as telling the story of this unique type of traditional Shetland boat."--Back cover

Hurtigruten 120 : the complete story /John Bryant.
The book gives a historical and contemporary account of Hurtigruten known as the Norwegian Coastal Express, which runs a round voyage from Bergen in Norway to Kirkenes. It gives details of the trip itself, and also charts the history of the coastal voyage, now called Hurtigruten ASA, from its beginnings towards the end of the 19th century, to the date of publication (2012). Both colour and black-and-white photographs of the boats and coastline enhance the story and a historical list of many of the vessels is included in the appendix.

The book of the Isle of Wight coast / Robin McInnes.
This book contains an illustrated account of the geology, development, and artistic depiction of the coastline surrounding the Isle of Wight. Roughly separated into three sections, the first few chapters explore the history of the shore through its formation and landforms, its early coastal developments, and its expansion into one of the most popular Victorian and Edwardian seaside destinations. The following chapters examine the natural environment including shoreline management issues such as erosion, landslip and coastal defence. The last section looks at the island's rich and comprehensive artistic output, in particular over 250 years of landscape painting.
