P34054; A close-up of running rigging close to a boom on board a two masted trading junk which is anchored in Penang harbour. The photographer is looking at three different types of wooden blocks including double ended blocks with single sheaves at each end. There is also a connecting block with a single sheave at one end and a hole at the other. The photographer was at Penang from 28 February to 7 March 1938. Negatives numbers P34052 to P34054 inclusive were taken on board the same vessel.

Their sails are stowed fore and aft and they have occuli on the bow. T485H is the vessel nearest the camra and T971H is to port of her. P34029; A slightly distant bow view of a sampan being skulled by a standing man in Penang harbour. The boat has occuli on either bow and the number 38 is inside the transom. Local, coastal and deep sea steamships are in the background. The photographer was at Penang 28 February to 7 March 1938. A vertical format negative. P33998; A port side view of the after part of a Tonkin type junk moored at Singapore. The photographer is off the port side just in line with the stern looking forward and to starboard showing the stern as far forward as the forecastle. The vessel is of the two masted type and her lug sails are stowed fore and aft. The top of her mainmast is out of the picture. Negative number P33997 is a view of the fore part of the same vessel.

The top of her foremast is out of the picture, as is everything aft of the foremast. A group of small Pechili traders fitted with leeboards are in the background. Number 1091 can be seen in negatives numbers P34324 and P34327 to P34333 inclusive. A vertical format negative.

The photographer is under the stern looking up into the rudder well showing the top of the perforated rudder and the rudder post. The photographer was at Singapore on four occasions during 1937 and 1938: 9 April to 1 May 1937, 13 January to 26 February 1938, 9 March to 23 March 1938 and 17 September to 30 September 1938. P34248; A very close port broadside midship view of the Hong Kong small trader type junk T3512H under sail and being skulled at Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. Single lug sails are set on each mast and member's of the crew are skulling. The heel of her fore lug sail and the lower leading edge of her mainsail are just in the picture. At least ten men are on board and two wooden rectangular boards have been placed on the bulwark.

She has a single lug sail set on a pole mast, a matting shelter aft and a crew of two. The photographer was in the area on four occasions: 6 to 28 May 1937; 14 October 1937 to 8 January 1938; 14 April to 4 June 1938 and 8 to 12 September 1938.

P33935; A port broadside view of a Tongkung type junk moored at Singapore. The vessel is ketch rigged and her bowsprit has a timber platform under it. The mainmast has a gaff and the mizzen mast has a gaff and a boom. She is in ballast and has a large perforated rudder. An awning is rigged abaft her mizzen mast.

The photographer is in the waist looking up at the aft end of the stowed foresail showing how the sail is folded down onto the lower boom with the bamboo battens acting as hinges. Their sails are stowed and the vessel on the right has matting overhanging the bulwarks. They both have occuli on the bow abaft the port number. The photographer's ship was at Tsingtao in the periods 22 July to 13 August 1937 and 17 August to 5 September 1937. A vertical format negative.

The vessel is of the single masted type and is registered at Singapore with the port number 1524. She has occuli at the bow and an accommodation shed aft. The lug sail is stowed fore and aft. P34543; A distant port very near broadside view, taken from only just abaft the beam, of a Swatow trader type junk under sail at Hong Kong. She has a two masted lug sail rig and her foresail is rectangular. Her rudder is not visible. The aircraft carrier Eagle (1918) is very dimly discernible in the middle background beyond the junk. Negatives numbers P34542 and P34543 are of the same vessel.

P34117; A starboard broadside view of a fully rigged model of an Antung trader type junk numbered 634 standing on a wooden cradle at the Roman Catholic church at Liu Kung Tao near Weihaiwei. The model was commissioned by Lt. D W Waters and was made by Tung Ya and his assistants. Negative number P34118 is also of this model.

P34373; A close view of the after parts of the Foochow trader type junks 1021 and 0667 anchored abreast at Shanghai. The photographer is abaft the sterns looking to port and slightly forward. The nearest junk is numbered 1021 and also has a small board with the number 34397 on it. Only part of her waist and poop are in the picture. Her main and mizzen sails are stowed and she has a boat on outriggers over the highly decorated transom.

The photographer is on the starboard side of the Eagle (1918) near the stern looking down on the fisher junks which are two masted with single lug sails set on both masts. They have occuli on their bows. The negative is badly marked at the top and left side and the horizon is well of the horizontal.
