Augsburg dial

Augsburg dial for latitudes 0°-75° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

The compass has a degree scale divided 0°-90°-0°-90°-0°. There are 16 points named in French and North is further indicated by a fleur-de-lys. A brass needle indicates the magnetic variation and the main needle is blued for North and surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. The latitude arc is divided 0°-[75°] and the inside is engraved with a single latitude: 'Bayonne 43.29'. The obverse side of the hour ring is numbered clockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII, and the inner rim is numbered 4-12, 1-8. There is decoration around the hinge of the hour ring and the latitude arc.

A simple plumb-bob support is hinged to the South side of the dial-plate and it is pierced to accommodate a string plummet and a brass bob. There are four screw feet for levelling the dial and the base of the compass is engraved with a table of latitudes mostly confined to French towns and cities.

This dial is similar to those of Langlois (see AST0518 and AST0260). It is simple in style and is unusual in the inclusion of levelling screws. On its obverse side it is signed 'Dubois Aparis'.
