Astronomical compendium

Astronomical compendium for latitudes 39°-48° North. It is divided into six leaves. Leaf Ia has an orthographic projection with an hour-circle and a degree circle. A rule (for sunrise and sunset) is pivoted at the centre and extends across the diameter of the projection. The pivot has a hole for a wind vane, which is missing. Leaf Ib contains the lunar volvelle with an aspectarium in the centre. It has a wind-ring with 12 points named in German, a lunar-age scale and an hour-circle. Leaf IIa has a horizontal dial with two hour scales; one around the compass hole. The gnomon is spring-loaded, shaped and pierced. The latitudes 48, 45, 43, 41 and 39 are marked by lines on the North side (inside) of the dial box. Leaf IIb is bare. Leaf IIIa contains a silvered compass, offset 8° West of North, with the cardinal points marked in Latin. On the diameter strut is a brass circle with a radial arrow-shaped indicator for marking the magnetic variation or possibly for use with the scale on the dial-plate. Leaf IIIb features knotwork decoration with leaves.

This compendium is similar in style to those made by Christoph Schissler. Like AST0154, the horizontal dial (for latitude 48° N) can be pivoted to become an inclining dial and so be used as a horizontal dial for several latitudes. The projection on leaf Ia is used to determine the times of sunrise and sunset for different times of the year.

For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
